MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Meryl Weaver accomplished a rare feat Tuesday, nailing a hole in one as Ohio women's golf wrapped up the Cardinal Classic in sixth place with a 617, four strokes out fourth place.
Weaver's (Canton, Ohio) ace came on the 131-yard, par-three seventh hole at The Player's Club, highlighting the day's events. The day ended with the `Cats firing a 320 and coming in tied for sixth place, just four strokes off of fourth.
"It (the hole in one) was surprising," Weaver said of the accomplishment. "When I hit it, I didn't think I'd hit it that well. Then I looked up and saw it going right at the pin and then drop in. It's a rare experience, so I'm glad I got it."
Megan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) paced the Green and White with a fourth-place finish at two-over 146 (74-72). She was followed by twin sister Meryl with a 155 (75-80). Close behind was sophomore Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.) at 157 (74-83). Freshman Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) finished with a 159 (74-85), while senior Jordan Fesh (Toledo, Ohio) concluded Ohio's scoring at 162 (77-85).
"Overall we played very well over these two days," Ohio coach Kelly Ovington said. "It was good to see that we can play at a high level. If we can get four or five very good scores, we can compete with anyone. It was a successful event."
Fellow Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan claimed the team title at plus-20 596. The Broncos were followed by Southern Illinois five strokes back at 601. Host Ball State came in third at 606, while Ashland and Eastern Kentucky tied for fourth at 613. Tying Ohio for sixth was Bowling Green at 617. Behind them were Northern Illinois (620), Youngstown State (620), IUPUI (622), California (Pa.) (622), Oakland (630), Dayton (633) and Indiana State (644).
BSU's Rachael Pruett claimed individual medalist honors with a two-under 142 to lead the way. She was followed by WMU's Brittany Hamilton one stroke back at 143. BGSU's Susannah Grunden was third at 145. Megan Weaver came in fourth, along with April Emerson of Eastern Kentucky and Kathryn Rogner of Youngstown State each at 146.
