Final Stats
ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University volleyball team dropped the final match of the 2010 Baymont Inn and Suites Invitational on Sunday afternoon to Northwestern, 3-1 (20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 16-25).
Katie Post was named to the all-tournament team after recording a career-high 15 kills and blocking four tries. Sue Jacobi earned a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs to go along with three blocks. Meryl Bender continued her strong play with a career-high 22 digs. Michelle Jantsch added a team-high 42 assists with Lexie Hartnett recording a team-high five blocks.
In the first set, Ohio out-blocked Northwestern and Post had five kills but the Wildcats picked up kills en route to the 1-0 lead. The set was tied 8-8 before NW grabbed seven of the next eight points to take a 15-9 lead. Ohio responded with eight of the following 11 points to get back within one at 18-17. Northwestern would score the next three points seven of the final 10 for the 25-20 win.
Ohio took the first three points in the second set but Northwestern then took 24 of the next 33 points to build their largest lead at 24-13. Jacobi had six kills in the set but it was not nearly enough as Ohio dropped it 25-16 and headed into the break trailing in the match, 2-0.
Out of the stoppage, the Green & White roared back in the match with a 26-24 win in set three. Jacobi had five kills and two blocks while Post slammed six kills and a block. Jantsch added 16 assists and as a team, Ohio recorded 17 kills and five blocks.
This time, Ohio snared the first four points before NW woke up and eventually tied things at 9-9. Hartnett, Post and a Northwestern attack error quickly gave Ohio the lead again at 12-9 before NW tied things once more at 16 all. The Wildcats led 18-16 before it was time for Ohio to counter. A kill by Hartnett and two blocks made it 19-18 Bobcats.
Northwestern took the lead at 24-23 and looked to close out the match but the 'Cats would not quit. A Jacobi kill tied the set and gave the Bobcats possession. A failed Northwestern attack and a joint block by Jantsch and Post closed things out in favor of Ohio.
Much like the previous two sets, Ohio took four of the next five points and lead 4-1 before Northwestern grabbed 14 of the next 17 points for a 15-8 lead. The Wildcats slowly pulled away and closed things with a 25-16 win in the fourth and final set of the afternoon.
Northwestern's Sabel Moffett was named the tournament MVP after the Wildcats swept their three matches over the weekend. Pitt's Amy Town, Tennessee's Leslie Cikra and Kayla Jeter and Northwestern's Naomi Johnson joined Post on the all-tournament team. Moffett had 12 kills and four blocks while Johnson had 14 kills, hit .500, and registered four aces in the final vs. Ohio.
The Bobcats are back on the road next week when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas for matches against host TCU, UTSA and UAB.
