Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio-The Miami baseball team got another strong pitching effort to go along with enough offense to defeat visiting Ohio 7-3 Saturday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
Miami improved to 27-26 overall and 12-14 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio dropped to 20-32 and 13-13 in the league.
Miami starter Tyler Melling (4-6) got the win, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Ohio starter Seth Streich (2-5) suffered the loss, yielding three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in three and one-third innings. In much the same manner as Bryce Butt’s performance on Friday, Bobcat reliever Rex Ingham also posted a decent outing himself to finish Saturday’s contest. The senior righthander finished the game by allowing just two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in the final four and two-thirds innings.
RedHawk shortstop Jon Edgington and first baseman Kevin Bower both drove in a pair of runs, while center fielder Ryan Brenner scored three times. Bower and shortstop Ryan Kaup both notched three hits on the evening.
Ohio left fielder Robert Maddox III was the visitors’ offensive standout, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Bryan Barnes also had two hits.
Maddox’s first-inning single to right field scored right fielder Jerod Yakubik, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. The RBI was Maddox’s 72nd on the season, which bettered his new single-season program record.
Miami scored the game’s next seven runs with two in the first frame, one in the second, two in the fourth and a run each in the sixth and seventh.
Ohio loaded the bases in the eighth and pushed across its first run of the inning when Maddox raced home on a wild pitch by RedHawk reliever Kyle Donawerth. Barnes scored the last run when Donawerth threw left fielder Adam Gecewich’s groundball away, accounting for the game’s final margin.
Both teams left their fair share of runners on base as Ohio stranded 10, while Miami left 13.
Ohio center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire stole his team-best 16th base in the ninth inning.
The two teams square off at 1 p.m. Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
