Bobcats Fall Victim to Dominating Performance by Thoreson

OXFORD, Ohio-Freshman righthander Mac Thoreson kept visiting Ohio off balance all evening with a complete-game effort as Miami downed the Bobcats 8-1 Friday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park.

                                                                                                                  

Miami improved to 26-26 overall and 11-14 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio dropped to 20-31 and 13-12 in the league.

 

Thoreson (5-5) went this distance, allowing just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in 100 pitches. Ohio starter Jason Moulton (3-4), the MAC East’s Pitcher of the Week the last two weeks, took the loss after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout and two walks in three and one-third innings. Reliever Bryce Butt finished the game on the hill for the Bobcats and turned in a solid effort, yielding just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk in four and two-thirds innings.

 

All eight of the RedHawks’ starting position players recorded a hit, while second baseman Jon Edgington went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Center fielder Ryan Brenner also had three hits, while first baseman Kevin Bower and shortstop Ryan Kaup both had two. In all, the Miami offense had 16 hits.

 

Ohio’s lone run came off the bat of designated hitter Seth Streich in the fifth inning, as he drove the first pitch he saw over the wall in right for his sixth homer of the season.

 

Prior to that, Miami built a 6-0 lead on single runs in the first, second and fourth frames and three more in the third. The home team added two more in the sixth for the final margin.

 

Miami right fielder Adam Eaton stole his 30th base in the sixth inning.

 

The two teams will square off Friday in the second game of the series, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
