Final Stats

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio-The Ohio baseball team used a bevy of pitchers Tuesday to limit Cincinnati to just two hits as the Bobcats edged past the Bearcats 2-1 in 11 innings at VA Memorial Stadium.

Ohio improved to 11-23 with the win, while the Cincinnati dropped to 18-17.

Ohio reliever Tyler Backstrom was credited with the win, getting two outs in the top of the 11th. Ohio hurlers Michael Dillon, Matt Robin, Brock Trimbur, Brent Choban, Rex Ingham, Andrew Danko and Brett Barber also shut down their Big East foes. Choban was especially impressive, as he struck out four batters in three and one-third innings.

Cincinnati’s Andrew Strenge (2-1) was tagged with the loss, as he allowed a hit and a run with no strikeouts and one walk in two-thirds innings of work.

Ohio center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire and designated hitter Seth Streich got two hits apiece, while Eldemire scored both runs. Eldemire and left fielder Robert Maddox III both drove in runs with Maddox’s serving as the game-winner.

Cincinnati got two hits, one from designated hitter Kendal Coleman and the other a solo homer by first baseman Kevin Johnson in the fifth inning.

Eldemire had a solo shot of his own with a first-inning blast down the left field line for his sixth homer of the season.

With the score tied in the 11th, Eldemire roped a two-out single to left. He then stole second for his eighth swipe of the season and moved to third on a Strenge wild pitch. Cincinnati then pulled Strenge in favor of Andrew Burkett, but Burkett fared no better as he gave up the game-clinching single up the middle to Maddox.

Ohio first baseman Jerod Yakubik doubled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

The Bobcats will host Bowling Green in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
