Final Stats
ATHENS, Ohio-Shortstop T.J. Baumet had three hits and knocked in four runs to pace a strong Ball State hitting attack as the visiting Cardinals beat Ohio 10-1 Friday. The contest, which was the MAC opener for both schools, is the first of a three-game series at Bob Wren Stadium.
BSU second baseman Kolbrin Vitek and left fielder Kory Benbow also posted three hits, while designated hitter Blake Beemer and catcher Zach Dygert knocked in two apiece. Baumet, Beemer and third baseman Stephen Claypool scored twice.
Ohio left fielder Robert Maddox III went 2-4, while second baseman Zach Keen’s RBI groundout to Vitek scored McDonough, who reached on a Vitek fielding error earlier in that fifth inning.
Ball State starter Perci Garner (2-0) got the win, tossing five innings, and allowing just that unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Relievers Derek Grabner and Michael Sandman held the Bobcats scoreless over the game’s final four innings, and yielded just one hit and one walk, while striking out four.
Ohio starter Seth Streich (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Ball State left 12 men on base, while Ohio stranded seven. Baumer and Dygert each had doubles, which were their sixth of the season, respectively. Vitek launched his fifth homer of the season and Beemer had his first. BSU right fielder Ryan Chenoweth stole his fifth base of the season in the seventh frame.
The two teams will wrap up the series Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m., due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday.
