Ohio Erupts Late to Nip Bulls

BUFFALO , N.Y.- The Ohio baseball squad exploded for 10 runs in the eighth and ninth innings to slip past Buffalo 15-13 Saturday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field. The win lifted Ohio to 27-28 overall and 14-13 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Bulls dropped to 14-38 and 7-19 in the league. The Bobcats, who have now won seven of their last eight, will be the No. 6 seed in next week's MAC Tournament and will face third-seeded Bowling Green at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

 

Sophomore reliever Adam Goodpasture ( Columbus, Ohio) got the win in relief and moved his record to 5-2, while Buffalo reliever Jeffrey Hains dropped to 2-8 on the season. Goodpasture tossed the last inning and a third for the Bobcats, allowing just a hit and striking out one. Hains also pitched the last inning and a third for the Bulls, but surrendered five runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.

 

Junior catcher Chris Klimko ( McKeespsort, Pa. ) had the big blow of the afternoon with a grand slam to left center in the ninth inning to put the Bobcats over the top. He also had an RBI single in the eighth to give him five RBI for the contest. Freshman right fielder Gauntlett Eldemire (Shaker Heights, Ohio) had a three-run shot of his own to center to open up the eighth and had four hits on the day. Senior center fielder Matt Stiffler ( Belbrook, Ohio) had the other dinger for Ohio , a two-run shot down the right field line in the fourth, to go with three runs scored.

 

Freshman second baseman Zach Keen ( Beavercreek, Ohio) and sophomore left fielder Jeremie Rehak ( Pittsburgh, Pa. ) also had three hits, while Keen scored three runs as well. Eldemire swiped his team-leading ninth base of the season in the fifth frame.

 

Buffalo was led by shortstop Jacob Rosenbeck, who went 2-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. He also had one of Buffalo 's three homers, a three-run shot to right center in the fourth inning. The other two came off the bat of center fielder Adam Skonieczki (solo shot in the fourth) and left fielder Charlie Karstedt (two-run blast in the second). Right fielder Chris Ciesla also went 4-6 with three runs and first baseman Nick Walczak recorded three hits. Second baseman Brian Randazzo had the only stolen base for Buffalo .

 

Ohio junior reliever Kevin Mementowski ( Parma, Ohio) and sophomore Jerod Yakubik ( Byesville, Ohio ), who made his first career appearance on the mound Saturday, combined to toss two and two-thirds scoreless innings. They gave up three hits and two walks, while striking out one before yielding to Goodpasture.
