ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio softball team scored five runs in the second inning to push to a 6-3 win over Western Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Broncos (17-15, 9-7 MAC) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior Becky Bartosz hit a two-RBI home run over the right field wall.
The Bobcats (22-21, 7-11 MAC) didn't score in their half of the first inning, but made up for it with five runs in the second inning for a lead that they held for the rest of the game.
Kristen Salvatore (Kirtland, Ohio) singled to center field and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Sacks (Chugiak, Alaska). Alicia Catlette's single to center field scored Salvatore as Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) advanced to second on the throw. Catlette then scored as Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) advanced to first on an error by WMU's second baseman. Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) hit a bunt single to score Jordan Paden (Walla Walla, Wash.), who walked at the plate. Petrich and Waters then scored on a two-RBI double to center field by Melissa Bonner (Kings Mills, Ohio) for a 5-2 Bobcat lead.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning. Western Michigan's Samantha Vargocko doubled to center field to score Lexi Jager for the RBI. Salvatore scored for Ohio as Waters hit an RBI single to left field.
Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) improves to 11-9 on the season, pitching her 16th complete game of the season and 53rd of her career. The senior struck out two batters, walked four and gave up five hits. Meghan Thomas took the loss as the Broncos' starting pitcher. She gave up three hits and five runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
The Bobcats will take a break from conference play with a doubleheader against Ohio State on the road Wednesday at 5 and 7 p.m. in Columbus.
