NASHPORT, Ohio - With two rounds in the books on Friday at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Ohio women's golf squad sits in fifth place.
At Longaberger Golf Club on Friday, the Ohio women recorded a 36-hole composite score of 654, seven strokes behind Toledo for fourth place in the eight-team event. The weather in Nashport was colder than expected, with wind and rain affecting play in the second round.
"I'm happy with where we're at, at the moment," Ohio Assistant Coach Jeff Hetler said. "We left a few shots out there today, but for the most part, we played well."
Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.) finished Friday's action as Ohio's top two golfers in the standings, tied for 13th among the field of 40. The duo shot 161s, with Mautz recording the lowest score for an Ohio individual on the day with a 76 in the first round.
"Kristen has been playing beautifully lately," Hetler said. "She had a 76 in the first round, which is great for that course, but was just the victim of some bad breaks in the second round."
"And Meredith played well, but had a little trouble with her putting," Hetler said. "I would expect her scores tomorrow to be in the 70s.
Ohio's Lindsay Bergman (Blacklick, Ohio), Shanna Siefke (Toledo, Ohio) and Katie Stafford's (Phoenix, Ariz.) are all tied for 25th individually with two-round scores of 168. Of those three, Stafford's 81 in the second round was the best 18-hole score.
There were no eagles recorded by Ohio golfers on Friday, but Bergman and Waterston led the Bobcats with three birdies apiece. Stafford and Waterston were the team leaders with 17 pars on the day.
Kent State was the team leader in the clubhouse Friday with a 602, 25 strokes ahead of second place Eastern Michigan. KSU's Kira Meixner is the individual leader with a one-over 145, three strokes in front of EMU's Catherine Fortin.
Saturday's third round is schedule to commence with tee times at 7:45 a.m.
