ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ohio wrestling team posted a 1-2 record in three dual meets Sunday at the Wendy's Big Classic Duals, earning a victory over Appalachian State but falling to Ohio State and Cleveland State.
"We wrestled good at times today but unfortunately didn't wrestle as well at other times," Head Coach Joel Greenlee said. "We are wrestling without somebody at 141 pounds and it's hard being in a 6-0 hole all the time. With Albert Madsen in there that's a nine-point swing for us a lot of times."
Ohio (12-6, 1-1) started the day with a 25-14 victory over the Mountaineers for their second win against Appalachian State this season. The Mountaineers were up by a score of 15-3 after four matches but the Bobcats earned wins in the final six matches to earn the victory.
"That was a good match for us," Greenlee said. "I thought we wrestled really well against Appalachian State."
The rest of the day was not as kind to Ohio, as the Bobcats suffered a 26-10 loss to Ohio State followed by a 24-12 loss to Cleveland State. Ohio did not lead at any time during the final two dual meets of the day.
The Bobcats had perfect days from a pair of wrestlers, including junior Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio) at 174 pounds. Love started the day with an 18-7, major decision win over Appalachian State's Neal Martin. He followed that up with another major decision win, this time by a score of 17-7 over Ohio State's Tommy Priestly. Love finished his day with a pin of Cleveland State's Nate Kmetz in 3:47. He is now 19-5 on the season.
Senior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) also won all three of his matches Sunday and has now recorded eight straight victories. Adelman began the day with a pin of Appalachian State's Derrick Calloway in 4:56 and followed that up with back-to-back minor decision wins over Ohio State and Cleveland State. Adelman is now 15-7 on the season and 13-3 when wrestling in dual meets.
"Marcus wrestled great today, without a doubt," Greenlee said. "He has really turned a corner this season."
Two other Bobcats posted 2-1 records on the day in sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) at 157 and freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) at 165. Frerichs won his first two matches of the day by score of 4-1 and 3-2 before a 7-3 loss against Cleveland State ruined his perfect day. Frerichs is now 11-6 this season. Ison began his day with a 6-0 victory before suffering a 7-5 loss to Ohio State's Chris Vondruska. Vondruska entered the match ranked 15th in the country at 165 pounds. Ison finished his day strong with a 6-1 win over Cleveland State. He is now 24-9 on the season.
Sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio), senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) and sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) each recorded one win in three matches on the day.
The Bobcats will next be in action Saturday when they host Mid-American Conference opponent Buffalo at 7:00 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
