UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Ohio women's golf squad sits in seventh place after the first of three rounds at the 14-team Nittany Lion Invitational, hosted by Penn State.

Playing at the Penn State Blue Course, the Bobcat women combined to card a 330 through 18 holes of the three-day tournament. Ohio will begin play on Saturday 17 strokes behind tournament team leader Rollins, which turned in a 313.

"The course is playing pretty tough, which is why you see high scores across the board," Ohio Assistant Director of Golf Jeff Hetler said. "The greens are really fast and firm. You can hit a good shot and it will hit the green and just roll off the back."

Ohio was paced on the first day by Meredith Waterston's (Bloomington, Minn.) 78, which has her in a six-way tie for eighth place individually, and just three strokes behind the leader.

"Meredith's 78 on a day like today is really good," Hetler said. "She struggled a little bit off the tee, but made some pars, and once she got in trouble she recovered."

Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) is the only other Bobcat to join Waterston among the tournament's top 30 players. She turned in an 82 to place her in a tie for 27th.

Also competing for the Bobcats in the tournament, Shanna Siefke (Toledo, Ohio) turned in an 83, Lauren Bergman (Blacklick, Ohio) shot an 87 and Katie Stafford (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded an 89. The trio is currently in ties for 33rd, 52nd and 66th, respectively.

"The scores don't look that great, but considering the playing conditions, I'm really happy how they hung in there today," Hetler said.

Caitlin Barry of Rollins is in first place after 18 holes with a three-over 75, one stroke ahead of three other competitors.

The second round is scheduled to resume as a shotgun start on Saturday around 1 p.m., following the conclusion of a cross country event at the Blue Course.
