YORKTOWN, Ind. - In the first competition of the year, the Ohio women's golf squad brought home an eighth place finish in the 18-team 2006 Cardinal Classic, hosted by Ball State.

Competing at The Player's Club at Woodland Trails, the Bobcat women shot a final round 317, duplicating their effort in Saturday's opening round. Eastern Michigan took the tournament title with a two-day score of 607, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Ferris State.

Leading the way for Ohio on Sunday was Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.). The Bobcat senior shot a two-over 74, which tied for the third-best score among all competitors on Sunday. Waterston's two-day score of 154 tied her for 11th among the 99 individual participants.

"Her (Waterston) 74 was really good today," Ohio women's coach Jeff Hetler said. "She struggled a little bit yesterday with parts of her game, but today she hit the ball well, was getting it up and down and making puts. She played well."

Senior Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and junior Katie Stafford (Phoenix, Ariz.) each recorded two-day scores of 159 to tie for 32nd place in the tournament. Rounding out the Bobcat field was Shanna Siefke's (Toledo, Ohio) 162 and sophomore Lindsay Bergman's (Blacklick, Ohio) 165.

"Anytime you are under 320 (as a team), that's not bad," Hetler said. "Obviously we know we can play a lot better, but being that it was our first tournament and that we had only a week of practice, it's not a bad start at all."

Grand Valley State's Ashley Smith captured the individual title after she recorded a two-day tournament-low 145 score, including a minus-1 71 on Saturday.

The Bobcats were in seventh place after Saturday's first round with an identical 317 score. Stafford recorded the best score on the first day for Ohio with a 78.

"We kind of played this course blind this weekend," Hetler said. "We only got four holes in on our practice round because a storm came in, so that was the first time we had seen that golf course."

The Bobcat women will next be in action at the Nittany Lion Invitational, hosted by Penn State, Sept. 23-24.
