RICHMOND, Ky. - Very windy conditions on Friday resulted in higher scores across the board but the Ohio women's golf team managed to move up two spots to sixth in the EKU Spring Invitational at the Arlington Golf Club.
After 36 holes, the Bobcats' score of 650 (322-328) is 43 strokes behind front-runner Toledo (607) but just 16 strokes behind second-place Eastern Michigan (634) heading into Saturday's final round. Tournament host Eastern Kentucky (640), Ball State (642) and Tennessee Tech (647) are also ahead of Ohio in the 14-team event.
Individually for the Bobcats, senior Julie Tomlinson (Noblesville, Ind.) is tied for 16th with a two-round score of 161 (81-80) while senior Ana Brown (West Chester, Ohio) and junior Shanna Siefke (Toledo, Ohio) both have carded back-to-back rounds of 81 to tie for 19th out of 86 competitors.
After recording the team's best opening round, junior Meredith Waterston is now tied for 29th at 165 (79-86) and junior Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) is tied for 73rd with a 175 (86-89).
"The greens are fast and break a lot so with the wind blowing, that really made it tougher because we're not putting well," said Bobcat assistant coach Jeff Hetler. "Tomorrow is supposed to be colder and still windy but there may be some rain so that may slow down the greens a little bit. That could be a good thing for us and hopefully we can get some scores in the 70s."
Toledo's Tammy Clelland recorded an even-par 72 on the 5,817-yard course Friday to take an eight-stroke lead over four others tied for second place in the individual competition.
The final 18 holes will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday. Complete results will be posted at ohiobobcats.com as soon as they are available.
