GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Ohio wrestling team took action in the first day of the two-day Southern Scuffle Friday, when the Bobcats finished the day in 23rd place out of 31 teams.
The Bobcats earned 17.5 points on the day for their 23rd place standing. Minnesota led the pack after day one with Edinboro in second place and Cornell in third.
Sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) went the farthest of all the Bobcats in the championship bracket as he won his first two matches of the day in the 133 pound bracket. Jackson earned a major decision win over Davidson's Chris Panfili and another major decision victory over The Citadel's Michael Fenton before exiting the tournament with back-to-back losses.
Sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) was the only other Bobcat to earn a win in the championship bracket and is one of two Bobcats still in action in the tournament. Reichard defeated North Carolina's Justin Dobies 2-1 before a second-round loss dropped him to the consolation bracket at 197 pounds. Reichard kept his tournament hopes alive with a pin of Stanford's Jared Boyer in just 1:24.
Freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) is the only other Bobcat alive in the event. Ison dropped his first round match in the 165-pound bracket but then reeled of three consecutive victories on the consolation side to stay alive. Ison recorded pins of Kent State's Sli Bostlman and Navy's Justin Jacobs before ending day one with a 5-3 win over Stanford's Scott Loecher.
Senior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) recorded two wins on the day in the consolation bracket but lost his final match to drop him from the 133 pound bracket. Sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) was the only other Bobcat to earn a win on the day with a victory in the 157 pound consolation bracket.
The Bobcats will finish up action at the Southern Scuffle on Saturday.
