Louisville, Ky. - The Ohio University volleyball team swept Tennessee State 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-17) in its first match of the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Classic.

With Julia Winkfield (Newark, Ohio) out, Melissa Griffin (Whitehall, Mich.) stepped up her game against the Tigers. Griffin put down 13 kills in only 19 attacks for a .632 hitting percentage. Holly Schetzsle also reached double-digits in kills with 10 while hitting .421 for the match.

Savanah Parra (Temecula, Calif.) set the Bobcat attack with 34 assists while Michaele Blackburn (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Ohio with 11 digs. Jenna Gaughran (Centerville, Ohio) matched her career-high with seven total blocks with Griffin and McKenzie Mauck (Muncie, Ind.) each adding four blocks.

The Bobcats hit .292 for the match while holding Tennessee State to only a .051 hitting percentage.

Ohio fell behind 6-3 in the first game but scored seven of the next 10 points to go up 10-9. After the Tigers tied it at 10, the Bobcats scored 20 of the next 31 points to win the first game 30-21. Schetzsle and Gaughran each had four kills in the opening frame. Parra assisted on all 13 of the Ohio kills in the game.

The Bobcats got off to a slow start again in the second frame, falling behind 5-1. Like the first game, Ohio did not stay down long fighting back to even the score at 10. The Bobcats went on a 10-3 run behind four kills from Griffin to go up 20-13. Tennessee State would close to within 25-20 but Ohio scored five of the next six points to take game two 30-21.

Griffin put down seven kills in the frame with Schetzsle adding six more to her total.

Ohio wasted little time disposing of the Tigers in the third and final game. The Bobcats went up 1-0 behind a block from Gaughran and Mauck and never looked back. Freshmen Jill DeArmond and Mauck hooked up for the Bobcats' 47th kill in finishing off Tennessee State with a 30-17 game three win.

The Bobcats improve to 4-0 on the young season while the Tigers drop their first match of the year to fall to 0-1.

The Bobcats will be in action tomorrow facing off against Wake Forest at 5 p.m.
