Bobcats Fall to Boilermakers in Tourney Opener

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio volleyball team fell to Big Ten opponent Purdue, listed 26th in the latest CSTV/ACVA poll, 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-20) at the Purdue-hosted Mortar Board Premier. Julia Winkfield (Newark, Ohio) joined an elite group in Bobcat history, becoming only the sixth Bobcat to reach 1,000 kills for her career.

Winkfield led the Bobcats with 13 kills while hitting at a .321 clip. She reached the 1,000-kill milestone in the second game with her 10th kill of the night. Melissa Griffin (Whitehall, Mich.) and Stephanie Blackburn (Cincinnati, Ohio) each added eight kills.

Savanah Parra (Temecula, Calif.) set for Ohio, assisting on 28 of the 42 Bobcat kills. Michaele Blackburn (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Amanda Andersen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) led the defensive effort with Blackburn contributing a team-high 10 digs while Andersen contributed a team-best three blocks.

The Bobcats fell behind 7-1 in the opening game but closed to within three at 17-14 and 20-17. Purdue scored 10 of the game's last 12 points to take the first frame 30-19.

Ohio trailed 6-1 in the early going of the second game but would not go away easy once again. The Bobcats fought back, cutting the lead to three at 9-6 and closing to within two points at 14-12 following a Griffin kill. The Boilermakers then reeled off five straight points to take a 19-12 lead. Ohio fought back to trim the lead to six at 26-20 and 29-23 but would get no closer.

The Bobcats started strong the third frame scoring the first two points and would extend the lead to an Ohio match-high three at 9-6, 12-9 and 13-10. Purdue countered with a 12-5 run to take a 22-18 lead and the Bobcats could not recover dropping the final game 30-20.

Ohio falls to 8-2 on the season while the Boilermakers improve to 8-0 on the season. Purdue is one of only 18 teams in the nation to remain undefeated this year. The Boilermakers are currently 14th in the nation in kills per game, averaging 16.85 a frame.

Ohio will open tomorrow's action with a noon start against No. 16 Tennessee and will finish up the tourney against Xavier at 6 p.m. Both Bobcat matches can be viewed via Gametracker < a="">here.
