HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Ohio women's golf team began its 2005 fall season with a third-place finish at the Lady Herd Fall Invitational on Tuesday. The Bobcats improved their team score each round and completed the two-day event with a 54-hole mark of 947 (325-313-309).
"We were a little frustrated after the first round but I was pleased with how we came back and played better the second and third rounds," said Ohio assistant coach Jeff Hetler. "The course was in great shape but it was really hot out there. It's a hilly course so I could definitely tell that we were a little tired and worn out. But that's good for us to get us in shape."
Bobcat senior Ana Brown (West Chester, Ohio) led the way with a personal-best three-round score of 234 (77-79-78), tying her for seventh. Ohio junior Shanna Siefke (Toledo, Ohio) finished in a tie for ninth out of 50 individual competitors at 237 (82-78-77).
"Ana played great," said Hetler. "She came out and fired a 77 right away. She just had a couple of bad shots in the second round and came back with a 78 today so I was pleased with her performance. And Shanna was steady and improved each round so I was happy for her."
With a 239 (84-76-79), Bobcat senior Julie Tomlinson (Noblesville, Ind.) placed 12th while junior Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.) was just one stroke back (85-80-75) in a tie for 13th place. Also competing for Ohio were junior Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio), who tied for 33rd at 251 (82-87-82), and freshman Lindsay Bergman (Blacklick, Ohio), who fired a 260 (87-78-95) to finish 44th in her first collegiate tournament.
Marshall, who was hosting the event at the 6,035-yard, par-72 Guyan Golf and Country Club course, won team and individual medalist honors. Allyson Hatcher paced the Thundering Herd with a 224 (77-72-75) to capture her first collegiate title. As a team, Marshall posted a 917 (307-301-309) to win for the first time since the program was reestablished in 2002.
The Bobcats, who won last year's inaugural Lady Herd Fall Invitational, finished just three strokes behind second-place Eastern Kentucky (314-315-315). Trailing Ohio were William & Mary at 956 (327-313-316), Longwood University at 973 (339-318-316), Murray State at 976 (331-319-326), Dartmouth College at 995 (329-336-330) and Austin Peay State at 1004 (335-330-339).
Next up for the Bobcats is the Sept. 24-25 Rocket Classic at the Heatherdowns Country Club in Toledo, Ohio.
"We need to do a lot of short-game work," Hetler said. "We left some shots out there by three-putting and making poor chip shots. And we just need to groove our swings a little bit because we don't seem to be confident in knowing where our shots are going."
