CINCINNATI ? The Ohio baseball squad earned its fifth-straight victory after pounding out a season-high 18 hits en route to a 15-0 decision Tuesday afternoon at Xavier.
Anthony Gressick (Lancaster, Ohio) went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs to lead the Bobcat attack that featured a season high three home runs from Ben Crabtree (Roxbury, Conn.), Dusty Hammond (Bellefontaine, Ohio), and Phil Sabatini (Oakmont, Pa.).
On the mound, Ohio (8-12, 2-2 MAC) used four pitchers to combine for the team?s first shutout of the season. Starter Rob Harmon (Villa Hills, Ky.) earned the victory against the Musketeers (11-18, 5-4 A-10) to move to 3-2 on the year after throwing two innings of one-hit ball.
?I thought for the most part we swung the bats pretty well, our pitchers went out and did a good job, and we played good defense -- turning two double plays,? said Ohio Head Coach Joe Carbone. ?It was probably the best game we?ve played all year.?
After a Crabtree single brought home Sabatini in the first inning, the Bobcats sent 11 batters to the plate in the second to score a season-best six runs in the frame. Two-run singles by Bryan Buck (Hudson, Ohio) and Gressick highlighted the inning that saw five Ohio hitters record hits.
A two-out Xavier error on contact by Gressick scored Bryant Witt in the top of the third and another tally in the fifth off a double by Gressick pushed the Ohio advantage to 9-0. Another Bobcat explosion came in the sixth inning, all with two outs. Round-trippers by Hammond and Sabatini sandwiched three-straight Ohio singles to push the lead to 14-0. The home run for Hammond was the first of his career.
A solo shot over the left field wall off the bat of Crabtree in the seventh inning, the 24th of his career, closed out the scoring. He finished with his second three-hit performance in the last four games, going 3-for-6 at the plate.
Gressick is now tied for the team lead with seven multiple-hit games this season with his three hits on the day.
?He (Gressick) did a good job of two-strike hitting today, so he?s starting to come around,? Carbone said.
Yale Silverman (Baton Rouge, La.) followed Harmon with three innings of relief while Dan O?Rourke (Monongahela, Pa.) and Gressick pitched two innings apiece to contribute to the shutout.
Mark Grissom (1-3), the first of five pitchers used by Xavier on the day, took the loss after lasting just 1 1/3 innings.
The 15-0 final was also the largest margin of victory for Ohio since an 18-2 win over Kent State in the 2003 season. The victory also moved the Bobcats to 12-2 against Xavier under Carbone.
?We turned on the ball very well today and that?s something we?ve been working on,? Carbone said. ?Hopefully we can continue this.?
The Bobcats will entertain Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday evening at Bob Wren Stadium. Luke Howard (1-1) will get the nod on the mound for Ohio in the 6 p.m., start
