ATHENS, Ohio ? The Ohio softball team picked up its second win of the season in the final day of the Purple and Gold Challenge. The Bobcats dropped the opening game of day three 10-2 to host No. 12 LSU but got their first win of the tournament by defeating Columbia 2-1 in game two. The Tigers won the tournament outright, going undefeated through the three day round robin Challenge.

In game one versus No. 12 LSU, Emily Futscher singled to the short stop to get on base in the top of the fifth. Shannon Weidner, who pinch hit for pitcher Zoe Heim, brought in Futscher with a home run, but the come back bid fell short as the Tigers went on to win 10-2.

In game two the Bobcats took one from Columbia. In the top of the third, Debbie Szaljeko perfectly placed a bunt to reach first safely. Marian Davis followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Szaljeko to second, bringing up Weidner, who was the designated hitter for the game. Weidner singled down the left side to bring Szaljeko home to get the Bobcats on the board first.

In the bottom of the fifth frame, Kimberly Krisman hit a walk-off homer to even the score. But the Bobcats would follow with another run in the following inning that would be enough for the victory. Maureen McKelvey got things started, singling to left field. Michelle Sauter followed, advancing McKelvey to second with a sacrifice bunt and Robin Miller drove in the winning run with a double down the left field line.

Heim was awarded the win, the first of her collegiate career, giving up just two hits and striking out five in three innings of work.

The Bobcats return to Athens, Wednesday, for their first home game of the season versus UNC Greensboro. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
