Final Stats
AKRON, Ohio - Playing without star wideout Scott Mayle, the Ohio football team's offense was outgained 498-110 Tuesday evening in a 27-3 loss to Akron at the Rubber Bowl.
Following a Brett Biggs two-yard touchdown run midway through the opening period, the two Mid-American Conference East Division teams traded field goals in the second quarter. Akron's Jason Swiger converted a 22-yard attempt after Reggie Corner intercepted an Austen Everson pass deep in Ohio territory.
Then, after the Bobcats gained possession on the Akron 41-yard line late in the quarter, they drove 24 yards in six plays to set up a 34-yard field goal by Matt Miller. On the final play of the half, Swiger missed a 47-yarder wide right and the Zips took a 10-3 lead into the locker room.
On the first play of their second possession in the third quarter, the Zips extended their lead to two touchdowns when Luke Getsy connected with Domenik Hixon for a 55-yard scoring strike.
Following a three-and-out by Ohio, Hixon returned a Miller punt 20 yards to the Bobcat 29-yard line. Seven plays later, Biggs found the end zone from four yards out and pushed the Akron lead to three touchdowns with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter.
Swiger added a 21-yard field goal with 12:21 to play for the game's final score.
The loss dropped Ohio (4-6, 3-4 MAC) out of contention for the MAC East Division title while Akron (5-5, 4-3 MAC) moved into a tie for second with the loser of the Bowling Green-Miami game played late Tuesday night.
For the game, Getsy completed 22 of 32 passes for 270 yards, an interception and a touchdown. Biggs was definitely the star of the game, though, carrying the ball 28 times for 188 yards and a pair of scores.
For Ohio, Everson turned in an 8-for-17 performance for 81 yards and a pick. On the ground, sophomore running back Kalvin McRae had his four-game streak of 100-yard rushing games snapped as he managed 30 yards on 14 carries. Senior tight end Dave Cody led the Bobcat receiving corps with four grabs for 53 yards.
The Zips held a commanding advantage in first downs (23-7), rushing yards (228-11) and passing yards (270-99). Sophomore safety Todd Koenig led the Ohio defense with eight tackles, four of which were solo.
The Bobcats close out their season next Monday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Miami. That game will be televised live from Peden Stadium by ESPNU.
