BATAVIA, Ohio - Ohio University senior Julie Tomlinson (Noblesville, Ind.) posted a 77 in less-than-ideal conditions Tuesday to tie for third in the Cincinnati Fall Classic at the Elks Run Golf Course just outside the Queen City.
"The conditions yesterday were absolutely miserable," said Ohio head coach Bob Cooley. "Today started out rainy and cold but then finally quit raining. It was just cold and windy after that and they moved the tees around so the course didn't play quite as difficult as it did yesterday."
Tomlinson completed the 36-hole event with a nine-over-par score of 153 after shooting an opening-round 76 on Monday. She finished just two strokes behind individual medalist Hillery Wilson of Cincinnati, who carded a 151 (74-77). Toledo's Tammy Clelland fired a 152 (73-79) to place second while Cincinnati's Allison Mayborg (76-77) tied Tomlinson at 153.
"Julie played really well," Cooley said. "Yesterday's round of 76 was really good and today she played well but she just missed a few putts and hit a couple of bad shots. She really could have won this thing."
Bobcat junior Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.) turned in her third top-20 performance of the fall with a 19th-place finish after shooting a 164 (82-82). Also competing for Ohio were senior Ana Brown (West Chester, Ohio), who placed 22nd with a 168 (85-83), junior Shanna Siefke (Toledo, Ohio), who carded a 173 (93-80) to finish 30th, and junior Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio), who came in at 178 (93-85) to finish 37th out of 56 individual competitors.
As a team, the Bobcats placed fourth out of 11 teams by shooting a 658 (336-322) on the par-72, 6,135-yard course. Toledo won the event with a 615 (310-305) and was followed by Bradley at 630 (313-317) and host Cincinnati at 639 (322-317) in the final standings.
Finishing behind Ohio were Youngstown State at 666 (343-323), Bowling Green at 677 (354-323), Cleveland State at 691 (346-345), Cincinnati B at 700 (375-325), Loyola at 711 (377-334), Robert Morris at 744 (377-367) and South Carolina at 860 (444-416).
The two-day event marked the final competition of the fall for the Bobcats. They will resume play in the spring as they work towards their first Mid-American Conference title. Since the MAC Women's Golf Championships started in 1999, Kent State has won all seven crowns with Ohio finishing second five times, including last April.
