Ohio Baseball Falls to Northern Illinois in Series Finale on Sunday

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (3-13, 1-2 MAC) wrapped up its series with Northern Illinois (9-5, 2-1 MAC) Sunday. After entering the day tied 1-1 in the weekend series, Northern Illinois got the win, defeating Ohio 8-2.

"Today was a better day of competing for all nine innings, but we're just not executing at the level we need to in order to be better," Ohio coach Andrew See said.

Ohio scored two runs on four hits with one error, while Northern Illinois scored eight runs on 10 hits with no errors.

Ohio was led at the plate by two solo homers, one by redshirt junior infielder Cam Bryant (Miamisburg, Ohio) and one from senior infielder Reese Harmon (Columbus, Ind.).

Junior right-handed pitcher AJ Dallmeyer (Washington Court House, Ohio) got the start for Ohio, his second of the season. In five innings pitched, Dallmeyer allowed four runs on five hits while striking out six. Sophomore lefty Hunter Winston relieved Dallmeyer and pitched one and one-third innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. Three other Bobcats also appeared off the mound for the Bobcats.

Northern Illinois scored first, tallying a run in the top of the first after a leadoff walk. Dallmeyer and the Bobcat defense bounced back in the second, setting down the Northern Illinois batters in order, including two strikeouts.

In the bottom half of the second, Ohio got itself on the board when Bryant sent a homer over the right field wall to leadoff the inning. Headed into the third, the game was tied 1-1.

The Bobcats ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing three runs, all on a home run. The Northern Illinois offense kept it going through the later innings of the game, putting up runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the eighth.

In the eighth, the Bobcats chipped away at the Husky lead with another solo home run, this time by Harmon, his first of the season.

Northern Illinois would get the run right back, though, scoring on an RBI single in the ninth to take an 8-2 lead going into the game's final frame.

Ohio couldn't tally any runs in the ninth, falling to Northern Illinois 8-2.

Up next, the Bobcats will head to Austin Peay for a two-game midweek series that begins Tuesday, March 10. That game will start at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
