CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio baseball team (3-15, 1-2 MAC) lost both games of its midweek doubleheader with Austin Peay (9-8, 0-0 ASUN) Tuesday afternoon .
Game 1: Austin Peay 18, Ohio 5
Ohio finished game one with five runs on six hits with two errors, while Austin Peay tallied 18 runs on 14 hits and only one error.
Senior outfielder
Cam Hill (Chicago, Ill.) led the Ohio offense with two hits, including an RBI and a run scored. Senior infielder
Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) reached base three times and scored once in the game with two walks and a single.
Freshman left-handed pitcher
Evan Lichtenauer (Newark, Ohio) pitched the longest of four Bobcats who appeared off the mound in game one. In three and one-third innings pitched, Lichtenauer allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out one.
Austin Peay got off to a hot start, scoring 10 in the game's first inning for an early 10-0 lead. The Governors added on in the third when four more runs were scored to give them a 14-0 lead.
The Bobcats got on the board in the fourth with RBI's from junior outfielder
Taylor Harris (Parrish, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore outfielder
Max Palinski (Gates Mills, Ohio). Ohio added two more runs in the fifth and cut the deficit to 14-4.
After the Governors scored again in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI from Hill gave the Bobcats a run back.
Despite a late surge of offense from Ohio, the early deficit was too much to overcome as the team fell to Austin Peay 18-5 in seven innings.
Game 2: Austin Peay 15, Ohio 6
Senior infielder
Reese Harmon (Columbus, Ind.) and Shepherd led the Bobcats in game two, each tallying two RBI's. For Shepherd, his two run homer in the eighth would be the only home run of the game for Ohio. Senior outfielder
Cale Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) also had a productive day at the plate, reaching base twice and scoring two runs.
Freshman right handed pitcher
Mason Gass (Oakdale, Pa.) had a productive day out of the bullpen for the Bobcats, pitching three and one third innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out one. Senior lefty
Aaron Blum (Cincinnati, Ohio) also had a good day out of the pen, pitching two scoreless innings.
Austin Peay scored first, crossing the plate in the first and second innings for an early 3-0 lead over Ohio.
The Bobcats got on the board in the third when a leadoff double by Steinbaugh would later result in a run on a wild-pitch.
The Governors doubled their lead in the fifth when they scored four runs and jumped ahead of Ohio 7-1.
Ohio chipped away at the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits. Harmon came through with the big hit in the inning, scoring two on a single.
Austin Peay thwarted any comeback attempt in the bottom half of the seventh, responding to Ohio's three runs scored with a five run inning. Going into the eighth, the Governors led 12-4.
Ohio's late-game offense continued in the eighth, scoring two more runs to cut it to 12-6. Shepherd hit a homer over the right field wall, scoring two to get the Bobcats back in the game.
The Governors would add three more in the bottom of the eighth to take a 15-6 lead.
Ohio would load the bases in the ninth but couldn't add on any runs.
