Kent, Ohio—The Ohio Bobcats Wrestling Team (6-9, 1-4 MAC) narrowly dropped Friday evening's (Feb. 6) match to rival Kent State (7-7, 2-5 MAC).
Both teams won five bouts and finished the annual "Grudge Match" tied at 19 points. The Bobcats roared back from an early 12-3 deficit to take a 19-16 lead after the 197 lb bout, led by technical fall wins from redshirt seniors
Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) and
Sal Perrine (Nordonia, Ohio). The Bobcats could not hang on at 285 lbs, however, losing by decision and tying the match at 19 before Kent State was awarded the victory via tiebraker.
At 141 lbs,
Kolten Barker (Louisville, Ohio) got the Bobcats on the board, defeating Kent State's Mason Tieffel by 3-2 decision for his first win of the season. With the match tied at 0-0 after two periods, Barker started the third period on fire, attacking Tieffel and getting him in a cradle, nearly recording a fall but settling for a three point nearfall. Barker conceded a point each late in the period for stalling and an escape, but held on for the 3-2 decision victory.
At 157 lbs, redshirt junior
Derek Raike (Point Pleasant, W. Va.) got back on the winning track, defeating Kent State's Reese Stephen by 9-2 decision. Raike recorded two takedowns in the first period to take a commanding 7-1 lead, accumulating nearly a minute of riding time along the way. A quick escape from the bottom position added another point for Raike to begin the second period. Neither wrestler scored in the third period, but Raike earned 1:10 of riding time for a 9-2 bonus point victory.
Redshirt senior
Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) dominated at 174 lbs, defeating Kent State's Ethan Barr by 16-0 technical fall, kicking the Bobcat comeback into gear. Thompson took control from the jump, recording a quick takedown before two four point nearfalls, taking an 11-0 lead after the first period. Thompson then recorded a quick reversal and another nearfall to finish off the 16-0 technical fall victory, including a bonus point for 2:42 of riding time.
At 184 lbs,
Sal Perrine (Northfield, Ohio) continued his strong run of form with a 23-8 technical fall victory over Kent State's Ronald Dimmerling that tied the match at 16. The win marked his 14
th of the season and moves him to 4-0 against MAC competition. Perrine recorded seven takedowns in the bout and earned a bonus point for 2:05 of riding time.
At 197 lbs,
Zayne Lehman (Akron, Ohio) defeated Kent State's Blake Schaffer by 4-1 decision. Lehman recorded a clutch takedown with less than a minute remaining in the match to secure a 4-1 decision victory, giving the Bobcats a 19-16 lead in the dual. The win was Lehman's 14
th of the season, and continued an undefeated season in dual meets (12-0) and in the MAC (4-0)
The Bobcats could not hold on at 185 lbs, losing by decision and the match via tiebraker.
