Ohio Softball Splits Final Day at UCF Space U Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ohio softball team (9-5) returned to action on Saturday (Feb. 21) for the final day of the UCF Space U Classic in Orlando, Fla. Ohio took the first game of the day against Charleston Southern (3-11), 4-1 before falling to Penn State (11-2), 16-1 in six innings. 

GAME ONE: Ohio 4, Charleston Southern 1 
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on six hits and committed two errors, while Charleston Southern scored one run on three hits with no errors.  

Individually, senior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a triple, one RBI and two runs. Senior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-4 and scored two runs, and junior Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) recorded three RBI. 

In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start and win, pitching seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, walked two and struck out seven.  

Hummel opened play for the Bobcats in the top of the first, recording a single up the middle, followed by stealing second base. A walk and groundout put Hummel and Bare in scoring position before a two RBI single from Wilson brought the runners home for an early 2-0 lead. 

The Bucs responded in the bottom of the first, scoring one run to cut the Bobcat lead in half. Hummel got on base again in the top of the second, then raced home off a Bare RBI triple to set the score at 3-1. 

After a scoreless third and fourth innings, Ohio extended its advantage in the fifth off a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.  

Strong pitching from Miller held Charleston Southern to no hits for the remainder of the game, giving the Bobcats the 4-1 victory.  

GAME TWO: Penn State 16, Ohio 1 (6 Innings) 
Overall, Ohio scored one run on two hits and committed two errors, while Penn State scored 16 runs on 15 hits with 2 errors. 

Individually, junior Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 1-for-1 at the plate and recorded one RBI. Senior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) went 1-for-2 , while freshman Sena Smith (East Liverpool, Ohio) scored the lone run for the Bobcats. 

In the circle, sophomore Ally Meyers (Waterville, Ohio) pitched 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out two. Senior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits. 

Penn State was first to strike, scoring on a throwing error followed by a two-run home run to take a 3-0 lead in the first. The Nittany Lions added to their total in the top of the second to extend their lead, 4-0. 

Two walks got two Bobcats on base in the bottom of the third. Farmer hit an RBI single to left center to get Ohio on the board, 4-1. 

Penn State went on to score 12 additional runs on 10 hits, ultimately winning the game, 16-1. 

UP NEXT: 
The Bobcats will be back in action Feb. 27 – Mar. 1 when they head to Clarksville, Tenn. for the Governors Classic. While there, the Bobcats will take on Stonehill, Southern Indiana, Austin Peay and Belmont.
