COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio baseball team (1-5, 0-0 MAC) dropped both games of its doubleheader (4-6, 1-6) against Tennessee Tech (4-3, 0-0 OVC) on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Game 1: Tennessee Tech 6, Ohio 4
Ohio finished with four runs on ten hits with three errors while Tennessee Tech had six runs on 11 hits with no errors.
Senior catcher Dylan Sheperd (Barie, Ontario) had the big hit for Ohio when he hit a two-run home run. Outfielders Max Palinski (Gates Mills, Ohio) and Taylor Harris (Parrish, Fla.) each tallied two hits in the contest in their five at-bats. Redshirt junior infielder Cam Bryant (Miamisburg, Ohio) reached base four times in game one with two walks and two hits including one RBI.
On the mound, Sophomore right hander Luke Bryant (Ashland, Ohio) had a career day going four innings and tallying a career-high five strikeouts while allowing just one run in his second start of the season. Junior righty Ethan Stewart (Langsville, Ohio) relieved Bryant and had an efficient three and a third innings, allowing four hits on 66 total pitches.
The Golden Eagles struck first when a one out double led to a run in the first inning.
The Bobcats jumped out to a lead in the fourth inning when a Sheperd home run scored sophomore infielder Grant Wilson (Bradenton, Fla.) who reached earlier in the inning via a hit by pitch.
Tennessee Tech didn't let Ohio hold the lead for long as it scored on a run in the fifth off an RBI single and then scored again in the sixth on a sac fly.
Fifth year infielder Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.) continued his big weekend when he brought the game to a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the seventh.
The Golden Eagles scored runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 6-3 lead into the games final inning. Bryant recorded an RBI single in the ninth but it wasn't enough to get the win as Ohio fell 6-4.
Game 2; Tennessee Tech 6, Ohio 1
Ohio tallied one run on seven hits and two errors in game two while Tennessee Tech tallied six runs on five hits with one error.
The Bobcats were led in hits by junior catcher Tyler Stack (Oswego, Ill.) who tallied two hits in game two. The lone Ohio RBI was recorded by junior outfielder Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Ky) who finished the day with one hit.
Freshman lefty Evan Lichtenauer made the most of his second career start, going five innings allowing just three hits and one run while recording one strikeout. Three other Bobcats appeared on the bump in game two.
Tennessee Tech struck first when a home run gave the team an early 1-0 lead.
Despite giving up a run in the game's first frame, Lichtenauer was perfect from that point on, as the game remained 1-0 until he was relieved in the sixth inning.
The Golden Eagles added onto their lead in the sixth and seventh innings with one run in sixth and four in the seventh to jump out to a commanding 6-0 lead.
Ohio responded to the big inning by getting on the board for the first time in the eighth when a Boyd single scored junior outfielder Taylor Harris (Parrish, Fla.) who reached earlier in the inning on a walk.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the ninth but were unable to score any runs, resulting in a 6-1 loss in game two.
Ohio will conclude its series with Tennessee Tech tomorrow afternoon, first pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
