ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (5-4, 3-1 MAC) kept its winning streak rolling on Friday (Oct. 2), securing its third-straight conference win over Central Michigan (3-9, 1-3 MAC) by a score of 2-1.Â
The game was scoreless heading into the final quarter, but some clutch shots and late game defense delivered Ohio a win.Â
Overall, Ohio scored two goals on three shots on goal with two penalty corners, while Central Michigan scored one goal on six shots on goal with no penalty corners. Â
Individually, junior forward Mia Scheulen (St. Louis, Mo.) had one goal on one shot on goal, and junior forward Addy Basile (Lewes, Del.) had the assist. Sophomore midfielder Iona Roderick (Cardiff, United Kingdom) had one goal on one shot on goal as well, it was her first of the season. Senior midfielder Emily Beitzel (Hershey, Pa) had the assist on the goal from Roderick.Â
In goal, junior Molly Schreiner (State College, Pa) allowed one goal while recording four saves in a full 60 minutes of action. Â
The first half of the game was a slow, defensive battle. In the first quarter, there was just one shot from Ohio's sophomore Karley DuCoin (Turnersville, N.J.) which was saved. Â
In the second period, there was just one shot from each team, a shot from Ohio's senior Natalie LaFleur (Fredericksburg, Va) that went wide, and a shot from the Chippewas that was saved by Schreiner. Â
The two teams went into halftime tied at zero, and the third quarter was more of the same from the first half. The Bobcats started the period quick with a penalty corner and a shot that was blocked, but the Chippewas applied some pressure on offense, getting shots throughout the period that ultimately did not do any damage. Â
With the game still tied at zero entering the fourth quarter, Ohio again got off to a fast start, breaking the scoreless tie as Roderick got a shot off with open space in front of the net which found the boards for an Ohio goal. Â
The Bobcats wouldn't record another shot until their second goal of the game, scored by Scheulen with less than three minutes remaining to take a 2-0 lead. The goal was created by a great run and pass from Basile. Â
Central Michigan wasted no time in responding, getting its first goal of the game just seconds later to make it a one-goal game. Â
The Chippewas continued to push for a last-minute equalizer, but the Ohio defense stood tall and was able to get the stop, putting a bow on a 2-1 victory. Â
Up next, Ohio is back at Pruitt Field on Sunday (Oct. 4) for Senior Day against Mercyhurst. The Bobcats will be celebrating four seniors prior to the start of the match. First touch is set for 2 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+.Â
