Marshall opened the game up with all the pressure on the Ohio defense, striking in the fourth minute on a goal that went just past Sloma to take an early 1-0 lead. The Herd did not let up and added on in the 10th minute off a header just past the diving Sloma, increasing the deficit to 2-0 only 10 minutes into the match.

Marshall continued to keep the pressure on the Bobcats defense over the next 20 minutes, before Murray recorded the Bobcats first attempt of the match, forcing a save from the Marshall keeper. Ohio continued to look to generate offense over the remainder of the half, but the Bobcats would be unable to get on the board, sending the game to the half with The Herd leading, 2-0.

At the half, Ohio outshot the Herd, 8-5, while the Bobcats recorded four corners to Marshall's zero.

The Bobcats looked to get the equalizer four minutes later when Dearing was open in front of the net but fired the ball just wide of the net to keep the deficit at one.
