ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (12-34, 7-18 MAC) opened its series against Ball State (32-18, 18-7 MAC) with a 5-4 victory on Friday, May 9.
Ohio finished with 10 hits and no errors. Ball State finished with nine hits and no errors.
Sophomore
Caleb Karll (Fitchburg, Wis.) led Ohio with three hits in addition to one run and one RBI. Graduate student
Trenton Neuer (Nicholasville, Ky.) and redshirt freshman
Drew Cox (Mason, Ohio) both finished with two hits. Neuer led the team in RBIs with three total. Five different Bobcats scored a run for Ohio.
Senior
Blake Gaskey (Davenport, Iowa) started on the mound for Ohio and earned the win. In 6.2 innings pitched, Gaskey recorded five strikeouts. Sophomores
Ethan Stewart (Langsville, Ohio) and
Jack Geiser (Medina, Ohio) recorded one strikeout each with Geiser earning his third save of the season.
Ball State got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Ohio got on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single by Karll. After Neuer was walked, Ohio scored another run and shortened Ball State's lead to 3-2.
The Cardinals largened its lead to 4-2 with a home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth gave Ohio a 5-4 lead over Ball State. Neuer tied the game with a 2 RBI double to left field. Cox followed with another double to left field, bringing home Neuer for the game-winning run.
The Bobcats will be back in action against Ball State on Saturday, May 10. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
