KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Ohio baseball team (13-36, 8-20 MAC) outlasted Western Michigan (18-31, 11-17 MAC) in extra innings to earn a 11-9 victory on Thursday, May 15.
Ohio finished with 18 hits and four errors. Western Michigan finished with 12 hits and one error.
Junior
Cale Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) led Ohio with four hits and three runs. Sophomore
Ben Slanker (Canfield, Ohio) hit two home runs. Graduate student
Trenton Neuer (Nicholasville, Ky.) finished 3-for-6 at the plate and tallied a team-high three RBIs.
Senior
Blake Gaskey (Davenport, Iowa) started on the mound for Ohio, pitching five innings and only allowed one run. Sophomore
Jack Geiser (Medina, Ohio) earned the win after pitching four innings and recording two strikeouts.
Ohio kicked off the game with a leadoff home run by Slanker, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning with an RBI double by Neuer and RBI single by redshirt freshman Drex Cox (Mason, Ohio).
A second home run by Slanker in the fifth inning gave Ohio a 5-0 lead over Western Michigan.
Western Michigan tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Both teams went back-and-forth, forcing extra innings.
A two RBI home run by junior
Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) lifted Ohio past Western Michigan in the top of the 11
th inning.
Ohio came away with an 11-9 win over the Broncos.
The Bobcats will be back in action at Western Michigan on Friday, May 16. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
