ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio baseball team (7-20, 3-9 Mid-American Conference) dropped a midweek game to Morehead State on Tuesday evening. Ohio was bested 4-3 in the contest.
"We came up short, but the fight was there to the end, to the 27th out, like we always preach and talk about," head coach Craig Moore said.
Freshman Hunter Winston (Hinckley, Ohio) got the start for the Bobcats. In his second start of the season, Winston allowed one run on three hits and struck out five of the 17 batters he faced. His four innings of work was his longest appearance of the season.
"His breaking ball command was better today than what it's been. He went in there, he had more conviction, I thought, from just watching him pitch today over the other couple of starts he's had," Moore said.
Morehead State (9-16, 1-5 Ohio Valley Conference) took over in the third inning on a solo home run to left field. With two more runs in the fifth, Morehead State had control of the game through the end.
Ohio snuck in a run in the bottom of the eighth on a double by redshirt sophomore Cam Bryant (Miamsburg, Ohio). Bryant's hit and a single by senior Jackson Cauthron (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) were the lone knocks for Ohio on Tuesday night until the bottom of the ninth inning.
Graduate student Blake Reed (Gahanna, Ohio) hit his second home run in four days to take away some of the Eagles' cushion in the final inning. In the next at-bat, sophomore Trae Cassidy (Northville, Mich.) tried to keep the rally alive with a double to right field, however, the inning ended on a strikeout.
"I appreciate the continued fight from this group. They're never going to quit. They're going to keep going. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get our bats going early in the game."
Ohio will be back in action on Friday to face Northern Illinois in the first game of a three-game series in DeKalb, Illinois. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
