PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –Winter is over in Athens and it's full speed ahead with spring seasons. Outdoor track and field kicks off, while baseball and softball continue with their MAC seasons. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints.

MEN'S GOLF
March 24-26 / at 2025 Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate / Pittsburg, Tenn./ Sweetens Cove GC / All Day / Live Results

The Ohio men's golf team returns to the course this week for the 2025 Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate March 24-26 in Pittsburg, Tenn. The three-day event is hosted by Miami at the Sweeten Cove Golf Club and will begin on Monday, March 24 with 18 holes, followed by 18 on Tuesday, March 25 and concluding on Wednesday with the final 18 holes. 

Competing at this year's event are Belmont, Murray State, Northern Kentucky, Miami, Austin Peay, Seton Hall, Ohio and Bowling Green. 

Competing for the Bobcats this wee are senior Sam Higan, junior Will Kates, junior Nathaniel Gray Lamont, senior Matt Daulton, junior Carson Trafford and junior Sheil Iyer

The Bobcats last took the course March 10-11 at the 2025 Ross Collegiate Classic where the Bobcats placed 18th overall, while Kates finished 46th.

The Ohio baseball team (6-16, 2-7 MAC) is back in action for four more games this week. The week begins on Tuesday, March 25 with the Bobcats head to Highland Heights, Ky. when they take on Northern Kentucky (12-9). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET at Bill Aker Baseball Complex and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats then return to Athens for a three-game series with Eastern Michigan (10-10,6-3 MAC). The MAC series begins on Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m ET at Bob Wren Stadium. Game two will take place on Saturday, march 29 at 2 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the series on Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m ET. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a a 1-3 week that saw the Bobcats pick up a 16-4 win at Toledo on Friday. Sophomore Ben Slanker finished 2-for-3 at the plates with one home run, three total runs and four RBI's. Sophomore JR Nelson tallied a team-high three hits – two of which were doubles – in addition to two runs. Sophomore Pauly Mancino also finished two-for-three at the plate with a double and a triple. Mancino also recorded four RBI's and one run.
 
Northern Kentucky is 12-9 overall and is coming off a weekend series at Oakland. EMU enters the matchup with the Bobcats with a 10-10 record and a 6-3 mark in MAC play. EMU is coming off a series loss at home against Miami and will take on Michigan on Tuesday before heading to Athens.

Ohio track and field kicks off the 2025 outdoor season this week when they head to Raleigh, N.C. for the 2025 Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State March 27-29 at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility. Each day will be streamed on ESPN+ starting at 4:30 p.m. ET each day. 

The Bobcats last competed at the 2025 MAC Indoor Championships Feb. 28-Mar1 in Ypsilanti, Mich. where the Bobcats placed eighth with 38 points. One of Ohio's top performance of the day was by sophomore Ellie Greenwell in the women's 800m finals. Greenwell placed fourth with a time of 2:11.11. Freshman Kaitlyn Stewart also earned a podium finish in the event, placing eighth with a time of 2:12.32. Ohio dominated the women's 5,000 meters with three Bobcats earning a spot in the top eight finishers. Junior Allie Martin medaled in the event with a third-place time of 16:43.11. Senior Kelsi Harris followed behind with a fourth-place time of 16:48.14. Junior Leila Boussedra was Ohio's third podium finisher with a sixth-place time of 16:53.07.

The Bobcats will prepare to host the 2025 Cherry Blossom Invite on Friday, April 4 as Ohio prepares to host the 2025 MAC Putdoor Championships May 15-17 in Athens.

The Ohio softball team (20-8, 3-0 MAC) is back in action for more MAC play this week when they head to DeKalb, Ill. March 28-29 to take on Northern Illinois (7-17, 2-4 MAC). The Bobcats will play on game on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m. ET at May M. Bell Field, before closing out the series on Saturday, March 29 with a doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m. ET. All three games will be streamed on NIUhuskies.com. 

Ohio is coming off a 3-1 week that saw the Bobcats open MAC play with a three-game series sweep of Buffalo at home. The Bobcats outscored the Bulls 24-2, defeating Buffalo in game one, 8-0 in five innings, 10-0 in five innings in game two, before securing the sweep with a 6-2 victory on Saturday. With Saturday's win, Ohio became the first MAC team to reach the 20-win mark. Freshman Abby Kennelly put together a stellar weekend, hitting .857 in seven at bats, recording six hits, drew a walk and had a sacrifice fly. She scored three runs, had one RBI and had a .857 slugging percentage, a .778 slugging percentage and only committed one error at shortstop with four putouts and 10 assists. In total, Kennelly was only retired once in nine at bats.

NIU enters the series with a 7-17 overall record and a 2-4 mark in MAC play. The Huskies are coming off being swept by Miami in Oxford this past weekend and will face off with Northwestern on Wednesday before hosting the Bobcats.
