MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The Ohio baseball team (1-6) fell 8-4 to West Virginia (8-0) on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Jack Geiser (Medina, Ohio) was charged with the loss. Geiser led Ohio with two strikeouts.
Ohio fell in the first inning on a triple by Sam White and later a double by Kyle West. West Virginia later added to its lead in the bottom of the third on a double up the middle
The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the fourth after sophomore Pauly Mancino (Westlake, Ohio) walked with the bases loaded. In the next at-bat, graduate student Blake Reed (Gahanna, Ohio) knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to add one more for the Bobcats.
West Virginia recouped one of those runs on a blooper to left field for its fifth run in the bottom of the fourth.
Ohio refused to relent though, and loaded the bases. It scored on a dropped third strike ruled as a wild pitch during sophomore JR Nelson's (Vernon Hills, Ill.) eight-pitch at-bat.
The Mountaineers scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a home run by Grant Hussey and a double by Logan Sauve. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh gave one more to the mountaineers.
The Bobcats collected their final run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by redshirt senior Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Sophomore Trae Cassidy (Northville, Mich.) led Ohio with two hits, including a double.
Ohio will be back in action on Friday against Butler for its first home series of the season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium. The game can be viewed on ESPN+.
