Ohio Baseball Earns its First Win of the Season with 4-2 Victory at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Ohio baseball team (1-4) earned its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory at West Georgia (3-2) on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Ohio finished with four runs, eight hits and no errors. West Georgia finished with two runs, nine hits and one error.

Four different Bobcats scored a run for Ohio. Sophomore Caleb Karll (Fitchburg, Wis.) finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Matt Ineich (South Lyon, Mich.) also recorded two hits and finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Graduate student Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) started on the mound for Ohio, recording two strikeouts on five at bats. Senior Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.) relieved Tate on the mound and pitched 4.1 innings. Boncal threw seven strikeouts, allowed six hits and two runs on 18 at bats. Seniors Adam Beery (Ravenna, Ohio) and Tyler Peck (Oak Creek, Wis.) recorded one strikeout each. Peck pitched for two innings and earned a save.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when junior Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) got Ohio on the board with a home run to right field.

Ohio and West Georgia both scored two runs in the fifth inning. Ineich's single brought in sophomore JR Nelson (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and increased Ohio's lead to 2-0. Ineich went on to steal second, advance to third on an error by West Georgia's catcher and score on a pass ball. At the end of the fifth inning, Ohio led West Georgia 3-2.

The final run of the game was made possible by a sacrifice hit by sophomore Ben Slanker (Canfield, Ohio). Slanker's sac hit allowed Karll to come in from third and score for the Bobcats.
Ohio's defense managed to prevent West Georgia from scoring any more runs and the Bobcats ultimately won the game in a 4-2 decision.

The Bobcats will be back in action at West Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 23. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
