
McWhorter Records Career High as Ohio Women's Basketball Defeats Akron, 70-62

AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (6-19, 4-10 MAC) earned a 70-62 victory at Akron (9-18, 3-11 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Graduate student Aliah McWhorter (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the team with a career-high 18 points; shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from the arc and 4-for-5 from the line. McWhorter also recorded a team-high five steals and two blocks.
Sophomore Bailey Tabeling (Seymour, Ind.) scored 16 points for the Bobcats and distributed a team-high five assists. Senior Kennedi Watkins (Ballwin, Mo.) added 13 points and five rebounds.
Graduate student Anyssa Jones (Westerville, Ohio) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Ohio got off to a slow start in contrast to Akron, who came out strong. The Zips got on the board first and went on a 16-3 scoring run throughout the first six minutes of the quarter. Except for a few careless turnovers, Ohio looked more put together in the final minutes of the quarter. A last second layup by Tabeling cut Akron's lead to 19-11 heading into the second quarter.
The Bobcats started the second quarter with a 7-0 run over almost four minutes, cutting the Zips' lead to 19-18 with 6:14 to go. Ohio's scoring run ended with an Akron layup at 5:46 to go. Ohio looked to close in on Akron's lead as the two teams traded points throughout the rest of the quarter. Two made free throws by McWhorter in the final seconds of the quarter gave Ohio its first lead of the game. Heading into the locker room, Ohio held a 31-30 lead over Akron.
The third quarter extremely competitive with the Bobcats only outscoring Akron 14-13. With 3:35 to go, the Zips tied the game at 40-40. Akron earned its first lead of the quarter, 43-42, with a three pointer with just over 30 seconds to go. Ohio retook the lead in the final second of the quarter off a successful three pointer by Tabeling. The Bobcats held a 45-43 lead over the Zips heading into the final quarter of the game.
It was a scrappy fourth quarter for both teams with majority of the baskets coming from free throws. Ohio was able to hold on and earn a 70-62 win over Akron.
The Bobcats will be back in action at Bowling Green on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
