Ohio Women’s Basketball Outlasts UIC, Earns Thrilling 72-70 Win on Friday Night

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (4-3, 0-0 MAC) outlasted UIC (4-5, 0-0 MVC) 72-70 in a close battle on Friday, Dec. 5 in the Convocation Center.
 
Ohio shot 38.7 percent from the field, 31.7 percent from the arc and 47.8 percent from the line. The Bobcats recorded 38 rebounds, 15 assists, 14 steals and forced 22 turnovers.
 
Redshirt sophomore Bella Ranallo (Lake Forest, Ill.) had a stellar night against the Flames. Ranallo scored a team-high 18 points; shooting 6-for-13 from the field and 3-for-6 from the arc. Ranallo also recorded a team-high seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.
 
Junior Bailey Tabeling (Seymour, Ind.) was Ohio's second best scorer of the night. Tabeling finished with 17 points; shooting 5-for-15 from the field, 4-for-12 from the arc and 3-for-4 from the line. Tabeling added five rebounds, two assists and four steals.
 
Junior Asiah Baxter (Indianapolis, Ind.) also finished with double figure points. Baxter contributed 10 points, five rebounds and one steal.
 
Baxter got the first points of the game with a three pointer at 9:51. With 5:54 left in the first quarter, UIC led Ohio 7-3. The Bobcats came back and tied the score at 12-12 with 3:06 left on the clock. After the first quarter of play, Ohio led UIC 16-13.
 
Ohio's momentum continued into the second quarter, allowing the Bobcats to extend their lead over the Flames. A three pointer by sophomore Gigi Bower (Powell, Ohio) put Ohio up 32-21 over UIC with 5:51 left on the clock. UIC went on a small scoring run in the final minutes of the half. With just over a minute to go, the Bobcats only led the Flames 32-28. Tabeling's three pointer in the final minute put Ohio up 35-28 heading into the locker room.
 
UIC challenged Ohio's lead in the third quarter. The Flames outscored the Bobcats 26-21; shooting 10-for-16 from the field and 5-for-10 from the arc. Heading into the final quarter of the game, Ohio led UIC 56-54.
 
It was a thrilling final 10 minutes of competition. The Flames retook the lead for the first time since the first quarter. With 6:41to go in the game, UIC led Ohio 60-59. UIC extended its lead to 66-60 with 5:28 left on the clock. Another three pointer by Tabeling gave Ohio a 70-67 lead over UIC with 44 seconds to go in the game. UIC tied the game again at 70-70 with 30 second left on the clock. A layup by graduate student Aliah McWhorter (Cincinnati, Ohio) ended up being the winning basket for the Bobcats. After a missed jumper by UIC in the final second, Ohio earned a 72-70 victory over the Flames.
 
The Bobcats will be back in action at Radford on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
