ATHENS, Ohio—The Ohio field hockey team (3-9, 1-3 MAC) defeated Queens (N.C.) (2-8, Independent) by a score of 2-1 on senior day, Sunday, October 5.

Overall, the Bobcats had 22 shots with 13 on goal, and 16 penalty corners. The Royals recorded four shots with one on net, and had three penalty corners.

Senior Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany) delivered another strong performance for the Bobcats, contributing Ohio's lone goal in regulation. Plaehn additionally led the Bobcats in shots and shots on goal, with nine and five respectively. Junior Natalie LaFleur (Fredericksburg, Va.) had the game-winning goal in overtime, capitalizing on her third shot on goal of the game.

Ohio put immediate pressure on the Queens defense to open the game, recording two shots on goal in the opening minutes from Plaehn and freshman Tiana Nhamoinesu (Thirsk, North Yorkshire). The Royals answered with pressure of their own, notching the game's first goal at the 11:17 mark of the first quarter. As the quarter wound to a close, the Bobcats were able to capitalize on a penalty corner, tying the game on a shot from Plaehn to level the score at 1-1.

The second quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for three total shots, and neither capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

In the third quarter, Ohio put nearly constant pressure on the Queens defense, as they were granted a total of six penalty corners. Plaehn, LaFleur, and freshman Adi Geer (Newport, Pa.) all put shots on net, but none were able to convert as the score remained unchanged headed into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter again featured relentless pressure from the Bobcat attack, as they were granted another five penalty corners. Ohio's offense generated five shots in the quarter, none finding the back of the net. This time, Queens responded with a scoring chance off a penalty corner at the 54:14 mark, but the Bobcat defense responded to stave off the attempt. The game was sent to overtime, Ohio's third overtime game in a row and second in three days.

The first seven-on-seven overtime period began at a fast pace, with both teams generating scoring opportunities but neither converting. The action lasted until the 66:27 mark in the extra period when LaFleur found herself alone on a breakaway, putting the ball past the Royals netminder to secure the senior day win for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, October 10 when they take on Ball State at Pruitt Field. First touch is set for 12 p.m. and will be streaming on ESPN+.
