ATHENS, Ohio —The Ohio wrestling team (4-2, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) kicked off 2025 with a 24-14 victory against Cleveland State (0-3, 0-1 MAC) at The Convo Friday evening (Jan. 3). 

Redshirt freshman Kaden Jett (Broadview Heights, Ohio) showcased his skills in the 141-pound bout, earning the Bobcats' first points with a gritty 2-1 decision over Laden Duncan. Redshirt sophomore Derek Raike (Point Pleasant, W.Va.) followed with a dominant performance in the 149-pound bout, where he pinned Connor Saylor in the first period, clocking in at just 1:09, putting the Bobcats in the lead 9-6.

After Cleveland State took a minor lead over Ohio, redshirt junior Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) showed his power on the mat in the 174-pound bout, defeating Ronald Dimmering in the third period with a 17-1 technical fall. That win notched the dual in tie of 14-14. However, redshirt freshman Jeremy Olszko (Northfield, Ohio) tipped the scales in favor of the Bobcats after he took down JR Reed in an 11-2 major decision in the 184-pound bout. After that, Ohio had a short 18-14 lead. 

Redshirt sophomore Austin Starr (Indian Creek, Ohio) escalated the lead for the Bobcats after he defeated Joey Lyons in the 197-pound bout with a 11-4 decision, which put Ohio ahead 21-14. To finish the dual, redshirt senior Jordan Greer (Avon, Ohio) earned a 7-3 decision over Daniel Bucknavich in the heavyweight class to clinch Ohio's victory. 

The Bobcats will be back in action on the road at the Mid Major National Duals from January 10-11 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The event is set to begin at 1 p.m. EST.
