PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – After a successful first week of September, the Ohio football team is back on The Frank this week, while soccer honors its seniors and field hockey hits Pruitt Field for the first time this season. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (1-1) is back in Athens on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they host Morgan State (1-1). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. inside Peden Stadium and can 

Ohio picked up its first win of 2024 and the 600th in program history on Saturday in Athens, defeating South Alabama, 27-20, on The Frank. Quarterback Parker Navarro ended the evening 20-for-28 with 204 yards to seven different receivers and no interceptions. He also threw for one touchdown and ran for another. It was Navarro's first career start with over 200 yards. 

Morgan State is 1-1 on the year is coming off a 14-9 loss against Towson on Saturday. Quarterback Tahj Smith finished the night by completing 13 of 20 passes for a career-high 163 yards, including a touchdown. He was also sacked five times.

The Ohio men's gold team opens the 2024-25 season with two tournament this weekend. The Bobcats open the season Sept. 9-10 in Huntington, W.Va. at the 2024 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational hosted by Marshall at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. Ohio is back on the course Sept. 14-15 at the 2024 Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate hosted by Oakland. The two-day tournament will take place in Rochester Hills, Mich. at the Katke-Cousins Golf Club. 

Teams competing in Huntington are Belmont, Dayton, Youngstown State, Morehead State, Le Moyne College, Purdue Fort Wayne, Marshall, Murray State, Longwood, NKU, Radford and Cleveland State. 

Ohio's starting lineup includes, Jack Neville, Nathaniel Gray Lamont, Carson Trafford, Will Kates, Matt Daulton and Sam Hogan competing as an individual. 

Teams competing in Michigan later in the week are; Trine, Purdue Fort Wayne, CMU, Oakland, Detroit Mercy, NKU, Cleveland State, Green Bay, Wright State, IU Indy, DePaul, BGSU and Butler.

The Ohio soccer team (3-1-1) is back in action for two matches this coming week, starting Thursday, Sept.12 when Ohio heads to Bowling Green, Ky. to take on Western Kentucky (2-4). First touch is set for 8 p.m. EST at the WKU Soccer Field and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats then return to Athens on Sunday, Sept. 15 when Ohio hosts Oakland (1-5-1). First touch is set for 1 p.m. at Chessa Field and can be seen on ESPN+. Sunday will also serve as Senior Day for the Bobcats. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-0 week that saw the Bobcats take down Marshall, 2-0, on Thursday in Athens. The game saw Celeste Sloma pick up her second-straight shutout and her third of the season. 

WKU is 2-4 on the season and is coming off a 2-1 loss against Arkansas State, while Oakland is coming off a 1-0 loss against Toledo on Sunday.

The Ohio volleyball team (3-2) heads west this week for the 2024 SoCal Cup 1. The three-day event is hosted by USC and LMU Spet. 12-14 in Los Angeles, Calif. Ohio's weekend begins on Thursday, Sept. 12 when Ohio takes on LMU (4-2) in the first match. First serve is set for 9 p.m. EST inside Gersten Pavilion and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then returns to the court on Friday, Sept. 13 to take on host, #20 USC (3-1). First serve is set for 10 p.m. EST. The weekend concludes on Saturday, Sept. 14 with the Bobcats battling Utah State (1-4) at 4 p.m EST. The final two matches will take place at Galen Center and can be seen on BIG+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 weekend at the 2024 High Point invitational in High Point, N.C. The Bobcats picked up a five-set win over host High Point, before falling the Mercer on Saturday. 

LMU enters the match on a three-match winning streak after defeating SMU on Saturday. USC enters as the 20th-ranked team in the country and is coming off a four-set win over Kansas State. USC will face off with Pitt on Wednesday and Utah State on Thursday before Friday's matchup with Ohio. Utah State enters the weekend on a four-match losing streak after dropping a three-set match to No. 8 Purdue on Saturday.

The Ohio field hockey (2-2) team is back in action for two more matches this weekend. Ohio opens the weekend on Friday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on Michigan (3-1). First touch is set for 8 p.m. and can be seen on BIG+. Ohio then finally returns to Athens on Sunday, Sept. 15 for the Bobcats home opener when they host Saint Louis (0-2). First touch is set for 12 p.m. at Pruitt Field and can be seen on YouTube. 

Ohio is coming off a 2-0 weekend in East Lansing, Mich. where the Bobcats picked up two overtime wins. On Saturday, Ohio downed Vermont, 2-1 in overtime, before the Bobcats returned Sunday to defeat Michigan State, 3-2 in double overtime. 

Michigan is coming off am 8-1 win over Providence on Sunday, while Saint Louis is coming off a 2-1 OT loss to Bellarmine on Sunday, and will face off with Ball State before the matchup with Ohio.
