ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 MAC) split the second day of the Bobcat Invitational with a 3 -2 win against Appalachian State (1-2, 0-0 SBC) (25-22, 26-24, 25-23, 25-28) and a 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-16, 28-26) against Wright State (3-0,0-0 Horizon) on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Junior Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) and sophomore Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) were selected as tournament All-Stars for Ohio.
MATCH 1 vs. APPALACHIAN STATE (3-2; 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12)
Individually, the Bobcats were led by Kharchynska who tallied a game-high 19 kills with a .341 hit percentage and tallied seven blocks. Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) had 16 kills with a .371 hit percentage and six digs. Sophomore Kendall Hickey (Fishers, Ind.) led the Bobcats with 17 digs. Sophomore Emily Waddell (Zionsville, Ind.) led the game in blocks with eight and recorded five kills.
Set one began with Appalachian State taking an early 11-9 lead. The Bobcats responded with a 6-1 run highlighted by a pair of aces from freshman Lexi Grissett (Albany, Ohio). The Mountaineers responded with a 6-1 run of their own to take an 18-16 lead. Ohio retook the lead after a 5-0 run to take a three-point advantage. Continuing to go back-and-forth, the Bobcats won set one on a service error, 25-22.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle until Appalachian strung together a 5-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. The Bobcats continued to trail until an ace from junior Chariti McKeller (Toledo, Ohio) tied the set at 15. Finding themselves down three, Ohio rallied together for a 6-2 run to tie the set at 24-24. The Bobcats went on to win set two, 26-24.
Appalachian State took control in the third set. The Bobcats went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 23-23, but ultimately dropped the set 25-23.
The Mountaineers evened the match score to 2-2 after winning set four 25-18.
In a winner-take-all set five, the Bobcats found themselves leading 5-3 after an ace from Hickey. Appalachian State cam back to take an 8-7 lead. A 5-1 run from Ohio got them to match point before Kharchynska sealed the win with a kill, 15-12.
MATCH 2 vs. WRIGHT STATE (0-3; 16-25, 16-25, 26-28)
Kharchynska led the Bobcats with eight kills and recorded six digs with two blocks. Freshman Darbi Ricketts (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Hunt each tallied seven kills with Hunt also recording 12 digs. Hickey led Ohio in digs with 14.
The Bobcats dropped the first two sets in a 25-16 decision.
Ohio found themselves down early in the third at 22-14. The Bobcats sparked a 10-2 run to take the 24-23 lead. Wright State tied the set at 24-24, then the team traded points until Wright State strung together three in a row to win set three 28-26.
Up next, the Bobcats travel to High Point, N.C. for the High Point Tournament where they will face off against High Point on Friday, Sept. 6 and Mercer on Saturday, Sept. 7.
