Ohio Baseball Falls to Western Michigan in 12 Inning Battle on Friday

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (8-17, 4-9 MAC) fell 6-5 to Western Michigan (13-13, 6-4 MAC) in game one of the series on Friday, April 5.

Senior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) scored one run on two hits and recorded two RBIs. Graduate student Bryce Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) also had a strong offensive outing with one run, one hit, and two RBIs. The other three Bobcat runs were all scored by red shirt junior Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who had two hits on the day.

Ohio's starting pitcher, junior Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) allowed four runs, nine hits, and recorded two strikeouts in six innings pitched. Junior Tyler Peck (Westlake, Ohio) was given the loss, despite only allowing one hit and one run through the final two innings.

Western Michigan got the scoring started with a solo home run in the top of the first. Smith quickly answered with a two-run home run to right center, giving the Bobcats an early 2-1 advantage. Antle reached on a fielder's choice and recorded his first RBI as Dolan crossed home plate.

The Broncos took back the lead in the top of the fifth at 3-2. Fifth year Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) grounded out to second bringing home Dolan for his second run of the day. Dolan opened the bottom of the seventh singling through the right side, then advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt, setting himself up in scoring position. Antle singled to center field, allowing Dolan to score his third run of the game, retaking the lead for the Bobcats.

Western Michigan tied the game at five in the top of the eighth. The game remained tied through the ninth, forcing extra innings. With neither team scoring through the first two extra innings, Western Michigan took the lead in the top of the twelfth. The Bobcats were unable to get the tying run, losing 6-5 in 12 innings.

The Bobcats will be back in action for game two of the series tomorrow Saturday, April 6. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET and will be available to watch on YouTube.
