PITTSBURGH – The Ohio softball team (23-22) returned to action on Wednesday (April 24) for its final non-conference game of the season, falling to Pitt (16-29) in a 5-4 heartbreaker.
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on eight hits and did not commit an error, while Pitt scored five runs on eight hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, senior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added two hits and one RBI. Senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa) had a double, two RBI and drew two walks, while junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) also had a hit. Junior
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) registered one hit and one run scored, while sophomore
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) added a double and a run scored for the Bobcats.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning, when Yuhas took the first pitch that she saw in hometown, crushing her first home run in two years to right field, giving Ohio an immediate 1-0 lead. The Bobcats looked to add on, with Logan drawing a walk and Hoffner reaching on a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to add on, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats added on in the top of the second inning. With one out, O'Brien and Keidel reached on back-to-back singles and Yuhas hit into a fielder's choice, Logan responded with a two-out RBI double, forcing a Pitt pitching change and giving Ohio a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning from both teams, Ohio looked to add on in the top of the fifth, with Logan walking to lead off the inning. However, the Panthers' defense was able to hold the Bobcats off the board, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with Ohio still leading, 3-0.
The Bobcats added a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single from O'Brien, giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead. Pitt got on the board in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Ohio lead in half, scoring two runs on three hits, with the Bobcats taking a 4-2 lead into the final frame.
Pitt was able to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take the 5-4 win.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Buffalo, N.Y. for a three-game series against Buffalo April 25-26. The Bobcats and Bulls will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m., with the series to conclude on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m. All three games will take place at Nan Harvey Field.
