PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Happy last week of classes Bobcats! Women's golf continues the MAC Championships in Columbus, while baseball returns to Athens and Men's Golf kicks off their MAC Championship tun. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

WOMEN'S GOLF

The Ohio Women's Golf team, alongside nine conference competitors, will begin the 2024 Women's Golf Mid-American Conference Championships Sunday morning. The three-day tournament, which takes place at Pinnacle Golf Club will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday (Apr. 21) and will wrap up Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 23). 

The course is a 72-par set up ranging 6,201 yards. For the tournament's layout, the front and back nines have been flipped so that the typical ninth hole is now the 18th and the tenth is the first hole. The course is filled with elevation changes, tall sycamore trees, and multiple lakes across the layout to pose both beauty and challenges to the competitors. 

Ohio enters the tournament coming off of the team's best finish of the season. At the Lady Jaguar Invitational, the Bobcats placed in a tie for second, just one stroke behind the tournament winners and fellow MAC competitors, Ball State.

After the first round, the Bobcats have a team score of 321, finishing the round in ninth place. Individually, freshman Morgan Rodgers (Centerville, Ohio) leads the green and white in a tie for 14th- place. 

MEN'S GOLF

The Ohio men's golf team is set to head to the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships set for April 26-28 at The Club at Chatham Hills. The three-round event begins on Friday, April 26 with 18 holes, followed by 18 on Saturday, April 27, before concluding with the final 18 on Sunday, April 28. 

Ohio enters the weekend after a weekend at the Richard Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. The Bobcats finished in 18th place after shooting a 907 (+55) as a team.

Three Bobcats shared the top spot for the team: sophomore Carson Trafford, junior Matt Daulton, and junior Sam Hogan. The three tied for 67th overall, finishing with a three-round score of 227 (+14).

Ohio baseball (11-24, 7-14 MAC) is back in Athens for four more games starting on Tuesday, April 23 when the Bobcats host Morehead State (23-17) at Bob Wren Stadium. The Bobcats are back in action for a three-game series against Toledo (19-21, 1-9 MAC). The series begins on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m., with game two set for Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. All three games are set to be played at Bob Wren Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 4-2 win at Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon, giving the Falcons their first MAC loss of the season.

Ohio softball (23-21, 11-8 MAC) is back in action for their final road trip of the regular season starting on Wednesday, April 24 when they head to Pitt for the Bobcats' final non-conference matchup of the season. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Vartabedian Field and can be seen on ACCNX. The Bobcats then return to MAC play on Friday, April 26 when the Bobcats take on Buffalo (15-25, 7-12 MAC) for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Nan Harvy Field. Ohio then wraps up the series on Saturday, April 27 for a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m. All three games can be seen on YouTube. 

Ohio is coming off a midweek split against Toledo, before taking the three-game series against Western Michigan in Athens, including a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning from Sydney Grein in game two on Saturday.

The Ohio track and field team is back in action this week for two events. First, members of the Bobcats will head to the Penn Relays, April 25-27 in Philadelphia. The three-day event will take place at Franklin Field and can be seen on FloTrack. Other team members will head to Louisville, Ky. for the 2024 Clark Wood Invitational at the University of Louisville. The weekend event will take place at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.

The Bobcats are coming off a weekend at the 2024 Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State. Senior Kenna Loveless led the Bobcats with a fourth place and career-best time of 11:13.62 in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Gracie Smith represented Ohio in the women's 100m hurdle preliminaries, recording a personal-best time of 15.19. Sophomores Allie Martin and Alyssa Mason ran personal-best times in the women's 1500m. Martin placed 13thwith a time of 4:32.19 and Mason came in 16th place with a time of 4:35.00.
