ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (23-21, 11-8 MAC) wrapped up the three-game series with Western Michigan (23-19, 12-7 MAC) Sunday afternoon (April 21), defeating the Broncos, 7-4, earning the series win.
Overall, Ohio scored seven runs on seven hits and did not commit an error, while WMU scored four runs on seven hits and committed two errors.
Individually, senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a double and a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) added another home run, one RBI and one run scored. Junior
Lauren Yuhas went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, walk and run scored and junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) added a double and a run scored. Senior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) also recorded double, run scored and RBI, while freshman
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) added a base hit and a run scored,
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) entered the game with two outs in the top of the first, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five.
WMU struck first, taking a 1-0 lead early in the top of the first inning. Already ahead, the Broncos loaded the bases with two outs, allowing Miller to enter the game and strike out the first batter she faced, ending the threat, and sending the game to the bottom of the frame only trailing by one.
After the Bobcats stranded a runner in the bottom of the second, WMU added a run in the top of the third, taking advantage of a lead-off double to take a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the frame. The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on doubles from Logan and Yuhas to cut the Broncos' lead to 2-1 going into the fourth inning.
Ohio took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Paoli reached after being hit by a pitch, Logan was able to put Ohio up on a two-out two-run home run to give the Bobcats the 3-2 lead going into the fifth.
Ohio added on in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and one error, with the inning highlighted by a double from Hoffner, a home run from Grein and a double from Paoli, giving the Bobcats a 7-2 lead going into the sixth inning.
After a scoreless sixth from both teams, WMU got two runs in the top of the seventh off a two-out, two-run home run. However, Ohio was able to get the next batter to ground out, securing the Bobcats' 7-4 win.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Wednesday, April 24 to take on Pitt. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
