Ohio Softball Falls at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (20-19) returned to action Wednesday evening (April 10), falling to Ohio State (20-15), 8-0 in five innings, inside Buckeye Field. 
 
Overall, Ohio scored no runs on three hits and committed three errors, while Ohio State scored eight runs on five hits and did not commit and errors. 
 
Individually, senior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) had one double and was hit by a pitch, while sophomore Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) and junior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) both had base hits for the Bobcats. Junior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa) drew one walk. 
 
In the circle, freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs, one earned, while walking three and striking out three. 
 
Ohio State struck first in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on back-to-back Ohio errors, taking an early 2-0 lead into the second inning. The Bobcats looked to get on the board in the top of the second, with Grein reaching on a double, while Hoffner drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with one out. However, the Ohio State pitcher was able to get the next two batters to strikeout, sending the game to the bottom of the second still trailing, 2-0. 
 
After Ohio State added a run in the bottom of third, Ohio threatened again in the to of the fourth. After Westler reached on an infield single, Grein reached base for the second-straight time after she was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning, trailing 3-0. 
 
Ohio State would end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on two hits and one error, ending the game on a grand slam, and securing the 8-0, five-inning win. 
 
Up next, the Bobcats will have the weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday, April 16 when Ohio heads to Toledo for a mid-week MAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
