TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (21-20, 9-7 MAC) returned to action on Tuesday (April 16), taking on Toledo (20-17, 11-6) in a midweek Mid-American Conference matchup. The Bobcats fell, 7-0, in game one, before rebounding in the second game, earning the 3-0 shutout for the series split.
GAME ONE: Toledo 7, Ohio 0
Overall, Ohio did not score a run on four hits and committed one error, while Toledo scored seven runs on 14 hits and committed one error.
Individually, freshman
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) went 2-for-3, while junior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) and senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both had hits for the Bobcats. Senior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) drew two walks for Ohio.
In the circle, redshirt freshman
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits, while walking and striking out two.
Toledo got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, before adding on in the bottom of the second on an RBI double, increasing the Rockets lead to 2-0 going into the third inning.
After Yuhas reached on a single in the top of the fourth, the Rockets added on in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs on five hits, taking a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning. Ohio looked to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning with Wilson reaching on a one-out single and Grein drawing a walk. However, the Bobcats would hit into a double play, ending the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the inning still training. 6-0.
The Rockets would go on to add a run in the bottom of the fifth off an error, increasing their lead to 7-0 going into the sixth. After a scoreless sixth inning, Ohio looked to rally in the top of the seventh with Logan and Wilson reaching on singles, putting runners on second and third with two outs thanks to a Rockets error. Despite Grein drawing a walk to load the bases, the Rockets' defense was able to record the final out on a fly ball to center, securing the 7-0 win.
GAME TWO: Ohio 3, Toledo 0
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on six hits and did not commit an error, while Toledo did not score a run on six hits and committed one error.
Individually, Yuhas went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while junior
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) added a double, run scored and RBI for the Bobcats. Sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added two hits and a run scored, while Grein added a hit and a walk for the Bobcats.
In the circle, freshman
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start and the win, pitching the seven-inning shutout. Lieving did not allow a run on six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one.
The Bobcats looked to get on the board first in the top of the first inning after Yuhas reached on a bunt single. However, Toledo was able to work out of the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the frame still scoreless.
After a scoreless second, the Bobcats once again looked to get on the board in the top of the third after Westler led the inning off with a single. However, the Toledo defense was once again able to get out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the inning still scoreless.
After six scoreless innings, the Bobcats finally struck in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, freshman
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) reached on an error and was replaced on the bases with sophomore
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio). After Westler singled to put runners on first and second, Keidel roped a double to center, scoring
Austy Miller. Then with two outs, Yuhas recorded a two-run single, giving Ohio a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the innings.
Toledo looked to get the runs back in the bottom of the frame, with the leadoff batter reaching. However, the Ohio defense was able to get a double play to clear the bases. After the Rockets recorded back-to-back singles, Lieving was able to get the final batter of the inning to lineout to second, securing the 3-0 victory for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats return to Athens April 20-21 for a three-game series against Western Michigan. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader at the Ohio Softball Field is set for 1 p.m., with Sunday's first pitch time scheduled for Noon.
