Learn more about Owen:Â
How did you get started playing football?Â
Owen: I kind of started playing football when I was like four or five years old. My older brother who's two-and-a-half years older than me, he played, so I started playing on his team. A lot of the time growing up, I was playing with older kids, like two, three years old and me, which helped me a lot because my brother was always better than me. I was always trying to get as good as him.
Would you say you guys were competitive with each other?Â
Owen: For sure, but I'd say honestly we more work together. We weren't necessarily the fighting brothers. We we kind of loved each other a lot and we worked together a lot out on the field. It was always if one of us playing quarterback, when at receiver we like could read each other's minds because we spent so much time together.
At what point did you realize you wanted to play football at the next level?Â
Owen: I think that was something that I've wanted to do since I was probably like 10 years old. That's when I started playing tackle football was at 10 years old, and I fell in love with it. I always knew that I wanted to play in college and then ultimately play professionally one day.
You're wearing an Arizona Cardinals shirt, would that be your team of choice if you played professionally?Â
Owen: They're actually not. The (Philadelphia) Eagles are my team of choice. My parents are from around the Philly area.Â
Do you have a favorite Eagles player right now?Â
Owen: It's got to be DeVonta Smith because he's a slot receiver and he's a smaller dude, but he goes out there makes plays. A lot of people doubted him because of his size and he goes out there and does good things.Â
Have you ever tried to recreate some of his moves on the field?Â
Owen: Yeah, for sure. He's really good at getting in and out of his routes. That's something that I watch a lot. He's super, super special and talented at that, so I try to emulate it every day.Â
Outside of football, what do you like to do?Â
Owen: I like to golf. I also have a community through my faith, so going to church. We run Athletes in Action ministry here on campus. Really just getting out, golfing and going to the range every day with some friends and then going to our AIA meetings on Monday nights and doing Bible studies.Â
Have you been able to play the OU golf course yet?Â
Owen: I've probably played it like 20 times yeah, it's a ton of fun we try to go out there as much as you can.
The quarterbacks like to do a scramble together, have you gotten to golf with them yet?Â
Owen: I've gotten to go with a couple of the quarterbacks. Pretty much go when I go, I'm usually going with Parker. I play with him almost every day, but I play with a lot of guys on the team. There's some talent but there are also some dudes who are really bad.
Would you ever try to take your golf career to the next level?Â
Owen: I wish I would like to do that. That's like a dream job. I'm not even close to that good.
What are you studying right now?Â
Owen: I'm in the MSM program, Masters of Science and Management, but I'm trying to get into the MBA. If I get into the MBA, that'll start in August, but if I don't get in, then I'll stick with the MSM program and that'll finish up in December.Â
What is your goal in the future with that?Â
Owen: My undergrad degree was finance. I really like the stock market and things like that, so ultimately, I want to be a financial advisor. My long-term goal would either be a hedge fund manager or open up my own financial advisory firm.Â
How did you learn about all of that?Â
Owen: I've always just loved math, and then it kind of just transitioned in high school. My dad is into the stock market and he taught me how to invest. As I started going through my degree, I learned a lot of things from friends and from professors.
Outside of faith, golf and football, what should Bobcat fans know about you?Â
Owen: I love to surf. Even though I'm from Arizona, we took surf trips, growing up to California a couple of times a year. I learned how to surf growing up, and I've been to a couple of really cool countries on surf trips. I've been to Tahiti, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, and then California for surfing.Â
Is surfing just something you picked up?Â
Owen: It's a family thing. Me and my brother, we fell in love it. We grew up going to Lake Powell on the boat, we would wake surf. Wake surfing is kind of like real surfing, but we also grew up going back to the east coast because that's where my family is. We grew up skateboarding, surfing, all that kind of stuff. But as we got older, we really fell in love with it. We've just taken summer trips and winter trips to wherever we can go surf so we've got to visit some like really, really cool places.Â
