Ohio Softball Falls in Heartbreaker to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – After a rain-filled morning, the Ohio softball team (11-11) returned to action Saturday evening (March 9) at the 2024 beach Chicken Brawl, falling to host Coastal Carolina (16-6), 6-4, on a walkoff homerun from CCU.
 
After the Bobcats' first game of the day was canceled due to weather, Ohio was back in action later in the evening against Coastal Carolina.
 
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on six hits and committed one error, while Coastal Carolina scored six runs on seven hits and committed three errors. 
 
Individually, senior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a homerun, RBI and a run scored, while junior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) had one hit, one RBI, one run scored and drew two walks. Senior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) and sophomore Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) both had a hit and an RBI, while junior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) also scored a run. 
 
In the circle, freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, walked two and struck out two. Redshirt sophomore Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) entered the game and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits, while walking two and striking out one. 
 
Ohio threatened to get on the board first in the top of the first inning, with senior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) leading off with an infield single. After sophomore Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third with two outs, Ohio was unable to capitalize on the base runners, sending the game to the bottom of the innings still scoreless. 
 
After the Bobcats' offense stranded a baserunner in the top of the second, CCU got on the board in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double, giving them an early 1-0 lead. 
 
After a scoreless third and fourth from both teams, Ohio got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. After Hoffner singled to score Keidel from third, Westler was hit by a pitch and Logan reached on an error to load the bases. Moments later, Austy Miller drew a walk, allowing Hoffner to score to give Ohio a 2-1 lead. Ohio added on one more before the end of the inning when Paoli also drew a bases loaded walk, putting the Bobcats up 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. 
 
Coastal Carolina tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and one error, tying the game at 3-3 going into the seventh inning. 
 
Ohio took the lead in the top of the seventh inning after a solo homerun from Logan, put the Bobcats up, 4-3 entering the final frame. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to hold the lead, with CCU ending the game on a walk-off three-run homerun in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 6-4. 
 
Up next, the Bobcats conclude the 2024 Beach Chicken Brawl on Sunday, March 10 when Ohio takes on George Mason. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m.
