CONWAY, S.C. – The Ohio softball team (12-11) returned to action Sunday morning (March 10) for the final day of the 2024 Beach Chicken Brawl hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Bobcats wrapped up the weekend defeating George Mason (7-14), 4-2.
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on six hits and committed two errors, while George Mason scored two runs on four hits and committed one error.
Individually, senior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added a double and an RBI. Junior
CiCi Keidel went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and a run scored, while senior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) and freshman
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) both registered hits for Ohio.
In the circle, freshman
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start and the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. She did not walk a batter, while striking out a career-high six batters. Redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) entered the game in the sixth inning, pitching 1.2 innings and earning the save. Miller did not allow a run or a hit, while striking out one.
George Mason got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring on an RBI single to put the Patriots up 1-0 early.
Ohio responded in the bottom of the frame. After O'Brien led the inning off with a single, she would score later in the inning on a two-out RBI double from Westler, tying the game at 1-1 going into the second inning.
After a scoreless second and third innings from both teams, George mason retook the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring on a fielder's s choice and an error to take the 2-1 lead.
However, Ohio responded in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Farmer led off with a single up the middle, Keidel would follow it up with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. After O'Brien reached on her second hit of the game and then stole second, Keidel would score on a wild pitch, allowing O'Brien to score on an RBI bunt from junior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.), putting the Bobcats up 4-2 entering the sixth inning.
Despite George Mason registering baserunners in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, the Ohio defense stood strong, securing the 4-2 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats return to Athens for the first time during the 2024 season on Tuesday, March 12 when Ohio hosts Marshall. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. inside the Ohio Softball Field.
