ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (12-12) returned to Athens after 23 games on the road Tuesday afternoon (March 12), falling to Marshall (14-11), 9-2, at the Ohio Softball Field.
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on nine hits and committed two errors, while Marshall scored nine runs on 10 hits and committed one error.
Individually, junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a double, while freshman
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) hit her first career homerun and recorded two RBI and a run scored. Senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had one hit, drew a walk and scored one run, while senior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio), junior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.), sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio), sophomore
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) and senior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) all recorded hits for Ohio.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits, while walking one and striking out two.
Marshall struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on two hits and taking advantage of two Ohio miscues, taking a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the frame. After The Bobcats stranded runners in the bottom of the first and second inning, Marshall added on in the top of the third, scoring a run on an RBI single to take a 4-0 lead.
Ohio threatened in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Yuhas reached on a single, before a double down the left field line from Hoffner put runners on second and third. Unfortunately, Marshall was able to track down a hard-hit line drive to right to end the inning, sending the game to the fourth with Marshall still leading, 4-0.
After Marshall took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, Ohio threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. After O'Brien led the inning off with a single, she advanced to second on a single from Westler, unfortunately, Ohio was unable to capitalize, going to the sixth still trailing 5-0.
Ohio got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Logan walked to lead off the inning, Farmer hit her first career homerun to right center, clearing the bases and cutting the Ohio deficit to 5-2. Moments later, Paoli singled and moved to second after Yuhas drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to add on, sending the game to the seventh trailing, 5-2.
Marshall added on in the top of the seventh inning, taking a 9-2 lead after a grand slam from The Herd.
Ohio looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, with
Austy Miller and Logan reaching on back-to-back singled. However, the Bobcats were unable to add on, falling 9-2.
Up next, the Bobcats open Mid-American Conference play on Friday, March 15 when they head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
